ClassicFord Welcome This issue we celebrate the high-revving, twin camshaft-spinning world of the 16-valver — a cylinder head design that Ford didn’t really embrace on a massive production scale until the 1980s, but then they caught up fast, giving us the mighty YBT (via Cosworth, natch), the underrated 16-valve I4 engine and then the evergreen Zetec E, which is still far and away the most in-demand engine for swapping into classic Fords, some 15-plus years after the craze first started taking off. But Cosworth (using Ford engine blocks) were way ahead of the game, of course, with the ground-breaking BDA engine which went into series (albeit small-scale) production in 1970, and even that was a development of their 16-valve FVA engine of 1967. SKINNER’S SPECIAL Injected SUs on the way We do like a trick induction set-up, and while the distinctive SU (Skinner’s Union) carbs were never fitted to Fords from the factory, they were available as an aftermarket conversion for sidevalve, straight-six and even Pre-Crossflow and Crossflow engines. Burlen’s new set-up though, takes the SU a step further after unveiling the SUi at last month’s Goodwood Members’ Meeting. Much like the DCOi that Northampton Motorsport developed from the Weber DCOE sidedraught, Burlen have reimagined the classic SU carb to house a fuel-injection system inside, so you still get the classic looks, but with all the (hidden) benefits of modern EFi.
