10-MINUTE TECH How to: fit an indicator buzzer The warning buzzer relay from Vehicle Wiring Products is a simple fit, requiring only two wires for power. One wire is the sidelight feed, usually found under the dash coming from the main light switch. Lucas wiring from the 1960s shows this as a red wire. TOP TIPS Apply an anti-rust covering to the inside of the outer sill prior to fitting it. Be wary that many uncured coatings will present a fire hazard. Although plug-welding is an acceptable substitute, you can hire spot-welders if you want an original finish. The inner sill, jacking points and floor could also be badly corroded. Don’t fit an outer sill until these areas have been rebuilt first. When removing a sill, brace the structure, especially if your car is a convertible. A fitted hardtop will also help alignment on soft-tops. And keep measuring as you go.…

HERITAGE Escort RS2000 Mk1 Original classic Fords: Its debut at this year’s Classic Ford Show marked the end of an intensive restoration for Mickey Stewart’s sublime RS, and it’s been racking up the accolades ever since. Fast forward a couple of decades and the tables have been well and truly turned though, as Mickey now owns an RS500, a Cossie Escort and several Mk1 and Mk2 Escorts, including this concours Mk1 RS2000 that has exploded onto the AVO scene via a full-on unveiling at the Classic Ford Show. EUROPEAN UNION TC AND MK3: THE DIFFERENCES The Taunus TC shares its platform with the Mk3 Cortina, but the most obvious feature of the UK model is missing from its German sibling — that now-iconic Coke bottle styling. Instead, the TC has its own door skins and rear quarters which give it a more sober and squared-off look, and as a consequence the taillights and bootlid are entirely different, too. Engine choices were appropriately market-specific too — while a choice of Pinto sizes were available for both, the Taunus never had the Crossflow, using a 1300 version of the Pinto for the smaller capacity models instead. MAKING THE MOST OF THE 1600 THE GROUP A-SPEC CVH ENGINE Longtime readers of this magazine will likely know that there’s little we like better than some good old-fashioned, Group A-spec engine tuning, even more so if said engine happens to be an all too often overlooked icon like the CVH. Ford Motorsport would originally have been happy to have supplied budding RS1600i racers with a brand-new, unbored block for use with pistons of their choice, but since the supply has long since run dry, Guido instead uses 79.95 mm Mahle items. The lightened and balanced bottom end is crowned by a trick head, complete with a Ford Motorsport camshaft, double valve springs, enlarged valves and a whole lot of porting.…

HOW TO BUY USED AXLES Do your homework before forking out for a replacement axle. Swot up on lengths and how hard parts are to find for them. The spring perches vary across the different models, and of course you’ve got the two main types of axle: English (diff assembly unbolts from the front, fitted to most rear-drive classic Fords); and Atlas (crownwheel and pinion are fitted from the back, found mainly in Capris and Mk3-on Cortinas). Atlas axles are expensive and the ‘right’ ones are much in demand, so it’s best to take along someone who knows what they’re talking about before you hand over any readies. Check the axle for straightness, and it’s good practice to try and buy them as complete as possible. Finally, try and keep…

NUMBER GAMES GETTING IT REGISTERED Tim had problems trying to register his Popular. “I still had the original numberplate 6854 UN, and a Vehicle Identification Number but no logbook, so the DVLA made me use a different registration number. After MoTing the car, the DVLA refused it because it had ‘100E’ at the front of the VIN. During the second application they looked at the car and said it was in such great condition it had to be an import. I had to get in touch with Customs at Dover to confirm in writing it hadn’t come into the country from abroad. Fortunately, on my third attempt they accepted the paperwork.”…

CHASING NUMBERS MK1 RS2000 PRODUCTION In true Ford chaotic historic record-keeping form, the number of RS2000s built between its launch in June (or perhaps July 1973) is up for debate.Although the RS project was more a marketing plan than a serious rally venture, it’s usually thought that only about just over the 5000 needed for homologation were built at the AVO factory at Aveley before it closed in December 1974. TJ’S TOOLBOX LEARNING ON THE JOB This time, I learnt about brakes and how to get them working again. It took us a while and we needed to replace heaps of parts, one after another as we found they didn’t work. Pumping the new fluid through took ages to do, but Dad tells me that it needs to be done or we would crash the car without brakes. I am very happy at how low the Cortina is now. It looked like a 4x4 at the start, and was way too high. In the past Dad has lowered all his Cortinas, so I think he knew what to do. WHERE TO WATCH THE BHRC The natural home of the classic Ford is on the gravel and asphalt of the nation’s forests, moorlands and closed-off roads. But if you think this championship is all about the Escorts, you’d be wrong, and of course the Blue Ovals face some stiff competition from other marques. RESTO LOG Tim wasn’t looking for a restoration project, then this 100E caught his attention... Tim got the 100E as a part-finished project in primer, but being a body man, he started poking around. Though in good shape, there were a number of areas that Tim wasn’t happy with, so he got the welder out. The floor and inner sills were in great shape so were left alone, but the outer panels were bare-metalled. Finally, after a year the 100E was ready for paint — using custom mixes to match the original shades. Then Tim could crack on with the refit — working only on alternate Sundays and Bank Holidays.…
