FUTURE CLASSIC FORDS LOOKING AHEAD While Ex-Pressed’s staple output has always been panels for Fords from the classic ’60s to ’70s era, they’re not ones to rest easy, and are constantly tracking down and buying new-old stock genuine panels (and sometimes complete bodyshells like this Mk6 Escort which will be carefully picked apart) for newer Fords, ready for the time when these cars start to be restored. “We’re looking into doing panels for Pumas at the moment,” Mike reveals, “particularly the Racing version, and I think the rear quarter panels and front wings will be the first ones we do. We’ve also just bought a KA bodyshell, and as I’m sure you know, these do like to rust!”…

reader’s restoration: anglia 105e PRESENT AND CORRECT Reader’s restoration: Graham Rose’s 1967 Anglia was given to him for free, but it’s taken a lot of work to get the car looking like it does now. Words Mike Renaut Yes, Graham Rose was given this 1967 Anglia Deluxe for nothing, but as you can perhaps imagine it wasn’t quite in the condition you see it here. “My friend, Nigel Hodges had bought it to restore,” says Graham, “and I was after a car to do up. He gave it to me in April 2000 in return for work I did on his flat. It came with a great history because he knew the first owner; in fact he’d known the car since it was brand new.” How bad was the Anglia?…

TRANSMISSION Whether it’s the earlier four-speed or post-September 1983 five-speed, the 2.8i’s ‘box is strong. If hard use and age have affected it, the signs are a sloppy shift, tired synchromesh, jumping out of gear and rumbling bearings. The same symptoms also apply to the manual gearbox of other V6 versions. C3 auto gives few issues, but check for a reluctance to select third gear and oil leaks from the front where the torque convertor is. The doughnut coupling between the auto ’box and propshaft breaks up over time, the telltale being a vibration through the gearlever. “CODENAMED GLORIA BY FORD, THE LATER MK2 WAS NO HALF-HEARTED FACELIFT”…

BODY Sills don’t usually rust that bad, so if they’re rotten it’s a good indicator that the Granada’s harbouring serious corrosion. The most likely place for sill rot is near where the rear subframe is attached. Serious rust is most likely in the bulkhead and adjacent chassis rails, while also check the lower rear quarters, rear wheel tubs and arches, spare wheel well, wings, inner wings, A-posts and around the base of the windscreen of sunroof-equipped models, as this is where the drain channels are. Good second-hand bonnets are scarce — costing upwards of £250 — as are Ghia X bumpers.…

Project Hunter CLASSIC FORD PROJECTS YOU SHOULD BUY AND TRANSFORM. This edition is all about the resto mod, so it would be daft not to apply the treatment to our two unsuspecting projects, right? QUERY OF THE MONTH SHEARED BOLT Q One of the water pump bolts has somehow fractured on my Crossflow — it’s the one that holds the alternator bracket and water pump to the block. There isn’t enough thread to nip it up, so somehow I’ve got to get the broken bolt out of the block. I was hoping it can be done with the engine in the car by removing my radiator for easier access. What’s the best way to remove the sheared-off bolt from within the block as I’ve heard Easy Outs can snap off and leave you in an even worse state.
