FORMULA ESCORT We’ve only ever seen a few tiny photos of this ’60s survivor — a LawrenceTune-built Mk1 Escort special saloon racer powered by a 2.8-litre Martin V8 Formula One engine, so it was a treat to get up close to it. The Escort features a spaceframe front end with the narrow-angle vee engine mounted right back. By modern standards the conversion is pretty basic but it’s a fascinating snapshot of clubman racing of the period, which is now owned by Roland Stoate, who’s been painstakingly piecing the car’s history together.…

THE DIFFERENT TYPES The most straightforward solution are ‘twin bodies’. On a four-cylinder engine this will be two pairs of twin bodies, much like the older twin carburettor set-ups. In fact, most of the time the older style inlet manifolds can be retained. Twin bodies can also be direct-to-head fitment. Direct-to-head bodies are as the name suggests, and there is no manifold between the throttle body assembly and the cylinder head. Instead, the end of the throttle body is machined to directly fit the inlet face of the head. One major advantage offered by this system is the ability to tailor the angle at which the throttle bodies sit against the head. The angle of the inlet ports within a cylinder head will vary from engine to engine, and therefore…

Butterfly and injector positions The position of the throttle butterfly and injector(s) in the inlet tract is vital to the way in which the air and fuel is mixed. If either is positioned too close to the inlet port the physical distance available for the air and fuel to mix before it reaches the cylinder is shortened. This is not so noticeable at low engine speeds, but at high rpm the air and fuel physically don’t have the time or space to mix properly to achieve the best performance. “THE POSITION OF THE FUEL INJECTOR IS VITAL” However, you do have to compromise because positioning the butterfly and injectors too far away from the inlet port will then have a negative effect on throttle response. Words Graham Robson In many ways, you could call the Merkur XR4Ti the ‘Sierra-that-wasn’t’. Although it used the same body style as the XR4i, it had a turbocharged Ford USA four-cylinder, was built by Karmann in Germany, and was marketed as a ‘Merkur’ (Merkur means ‘Mercury’ in German). The engine was a single OHC 2.3-litre, closely related to the European Pinto, as used in the Mustang SHO of the period. His most recent changes include sorting the suspension (“It’s very low — just 33 mm from the ground at its lowest point”) along with swapping the wheels from the previous Borranis to Revolutions. “I’ve bought a pair of 8x13s for the rear from the UK,” explains Ulf, “and will eventually buy and fit the fronts, too, but in the meantime I’ll run it on the original steel wheels. DIAMETER The diameter of the throttle bodies will be heavily influenced by a number of factors. Power, rpm, head design, cylinder capacity, the position of the throttle body in the inlet tract, and the position of the injector itself will all affect the size of the throttle body to be used. For example, fitting a set of motorbike throttle bodies which are designed to work on a small capacity, but very high-revving engine will not work effectively if you then decide to bolt them onto a V8 which will only rev to 6000 rpm. The key behind a good set of throttle bodies is keeping the air speed correct for the application. Higher revving, smaller capacity engines will need a higher air speed but not necessarily need to flow great…

Taper and parallel There are two types of throttle body: tapered and parallel. Parallel are fairly self-explanatory as the diameter remains the same throughout the entire throttle body. However, tapered bodies actually decrease in diameter, so the trumpet side of the body has a larger diameter to where it meets the cylinder head. This effectively turns the whole inlet system into one big inlet trumpet or velocity stack. And the later terminology should give you a clue as to the advantage it offers; a constant increase in air speed. As the diameter gets smaller, the air needs to accelerate to get through it. SMALL FORD SUNDAY After reading about Small Ford Sunday in your magazine last year (June 2018 issue), I arranged a holiday in Australia for this February. Know this THROTTLE BODIES They look the part, they sound awesome, and they make tuned classic Fords more drivable. But just how do throttle bodies actually work? Let’s find out. Most modern production cars come equipped with a single throttle body to control the amount of air entering the engine. Inside is a butterfly valve which opens and closes in correlation with the throttle position, and therefore allows more or less air to enter the engine. A single throttle body is adequate for most road cars because it offers very gentle throttle response and is easily silenced to meet manufacturer’s noise limits. However, on a performance or fast road car you don’t want a gentle throttle response. And you don’t want to have to wait for the entire induction system…

Length The length of the inlet tract plays a crucial part in throttle body design. When talking about the inlet tract we are referring to the distance between the centre of the inlet valve and the very end of the trumpet. Again, this has an impact on air speed, and one of the most common causes for disappointment and poor performance is when people have fitted an under-length system. It’s reported that you can lose as much as 30 per cent of an engine’s true power potential with an incorrect length inlet tract. The ideal length for a system will depend on other modifications made to the engine, but typically a longer system will produce more torque and mid-range power, whereas a shorter system will move the peak torque and…

Barrel or slider throttles Barrel and slider throttles work on the same principle as butterfly throttle bodies, but don’t use a butterfly valve mounted on a shaft. Instead, either a roller barrel or slider mechanism is used to control the amount of air allowed to enter the engine. Roller barrels are basically two tubes inside each other. The outer tube will have holes in either side, which allow air to enter and exit. The inner tube will have exactly the same holes machined in them, but as it rotates inside the outer tube it will blank off the holes. With the throttle closed the inner tube will rotate right round so that the holes in the outer tube are completed blanked off. At full throttle it will rotate so that…

PANEL GAPS Q I’m having a really tough time getting the panel gaps on my Mk1 Escort rebuild right. It’s the front wing that’s the problem. I’ve tried to get the wing flush with the door (as you look along the side of the car) which means I have to push the wing inwards, but as soon as I do that I have problems with the bonnet (the wing’s too close) and the scuttle panel (the wing doesn’t fit underneath it as it should). Have you any idea what could be wrong? Do you think my other panels could be misaligned which is why the wing doesn’t fit? Also, is there any way possible I can make the wing fit by modifying it? The Friday brought an enormous crowd to the centre of Bastogne, for an autograph session and a display of more than 300 cars entered. Unique! Saturday was shared between classification sections spread between the provinces of Liège and Luxembourg, and on Sunday the Legend Boucles took on another dimension, with a series of timed sections in the heart of the Luxembourg forests thanks to a special stage of more than 40 km.
