Automotive historian I am not, but as a diehard marque enthusiast with a passion for short-wheelbase 911s, not to mention the fact my company, Carrera Classic, restores and races two-litre variants of the evergreen Neunelfer, it’s fair to say I know my way around Porsche production cars from the mid-1960s. From early street-specification 911s to 912s, cars competing in the Peter Auto 2.0 Cup series and FIA-qualifying rally machines, I’ve worked on (and restored) many different flavours of Porsche sports car from the period. Chances are, if you know about the 912, you know about former commercial pilot and dyed-in-the-wool Porschephile, Max Levell. As founder of 912 restoration, maintenance and tuning specialist, Revival Cars, he’s maintained solid enthusiasm for the brilliance of these four-cylinder P-machines for as long as anyone can remember, even back when they were worth a fraction of their current value. “I never thought we’d see the day a 912 sells for £140,000, but here we are,” he gasps, referencing a recent Classic Porsche feature car. As we all know, in the wake of the Global Financial Crisis of 2008, investors looked for opportunities to safely park their money away from the crumbling housing market and asset management institutions in turmoil. After his ascension to the leadership of Porsche in March 1972, Dr Ernst Fuhrmann gave great impetus to a race-prepared version of the 911. Both Fuhrmann and his supervisory board saw a need to de-escalate the cost and complexity of Porsche’s racing effort from the astronomical heights reached with the turbocharged 917. “A very interesting adventure,” he said of the costly Can-Am campaign, “but one cannot constantly play on so many pianos. We must now stay closer to production cars.” Porsche motorsport engineer, Norbert Singer, remembers the period well. “One of the first things Dr Fuhrmann decided was that we couldn’t afford to continue an expensive racing programme. Chris Dobson knew what he wanted, but it absolutely wasn’t a red 911. “Slate Grey,” he laughs. “I hated the idea of owning a Guards Red Porsche. Too conspicuous. Grey, on the other hand, is understated. This was what I was looking for.” Unfortunately, Leeds-based marque indie, Strasse, didn’t have a grey 911 in stock when he was driving past en route to a job in Bradford. The manufacturer has reissued these textiles as part of its continually expanding Porsche Classic range, meaning the interiors of many of the brand’s legacy products can be restored to their original condition and specification with a Porsche certificate of authenticity.
