March 20, 1935 – January 29, 2022
Born in Birmingham, Alabama, and inducted to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2015 as part of the Butterfield Blues Band, Sam Lay played drums for some of the biggest names in blues, rock and R&B, including Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Bob Dylan, Howlin’ Wolf, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Little Walter and Magic Sam. In 2000 Lay was nominated for a Grammy. He died at a nursing home in Chicago at the age of 86.
