PLANNING A TRIP • North Norfolk’s Deep History Coast Discovery Trail stretches 22 miles from Weybourne to Cart Gap and follows the route of the North Norfolk Coast Path. Lizzie walked it over three days. OS Explorer Map 252 Norfolk Coast East takes in the entire walk and other circular trails in the area. Most of the trail can be walked along the coast but check the tides at tidetimes.org.uk. From a distance, artist Justine Warner’s coastal and woodland scenes appear to be beautiful paintings or perhaps even photographs. Look closer though and you notice that everything – from sea and sky to trees and beach – contains exquisite stitches, paisley pattern spots and stripes taken from men’s ties and other scraps of fabric. Since 2019, this up-and-coming textile artist has been leading two-day residential courses at Raithwaite Estate, an up-market hotel complex on a secluded 80-acre site between Whitby and Sandsend, North Yorkshire. The course is called ‘Landscape or Seascape in recycled textiles using layering and blending in fabric’ – artworks created by using machine-embroidered appliqué. Many of the beaches that are good for shrimping are tidally sensitive, and while you are getting carried away having fun it is easy to get cut off by the tide, and a call to the RNLI often follows. To save this happening, here’s a simple step-by-step guide: 1. Observe the lowest part of the beach on your way back to dry land and note what time it gets flooded by the rising tide, making sure you do this from the side from which you are not cut off. 2. Check the Imray Tides Planner and scroll along the tide graph until you find the tide height for that time; this is your cut-off tide. The turnstiles clank and the crowd surges forward along the pier, tickets in hand. At the gangway a wizened, uniformed seaman checks that the passengers have the correct tickets before they clamber up the gangplank. Once aboard, acrid smoke from the funnel stings their eyes as it’s driven across the deck by a sharp breeze. It will be a choppy crossing. Paddle steamers with their long narrow hulls and a big churning paddle wheel on each side are fast ships and sea spray soon starts to drive across the decks on the breezy day. Everybody likes the water, don’t they? I live in Hampshire, so I sail a bit in the Solent (pictured). It’s a fantastic part of the world. It’s got its own little micro-climate, beautiful weather and, of course, it’s a mecca for sailing. I’ve been sailing for about 14 years. I get less and less chance to do it now, though! We didn’t really holiday much when I was a child. We ventured to Scarborough and Whitby as that was the nearest coastline to us – about 30 miles away from the farm in North Yorkshire, where I grew up, so we went there and on occasional holidays to Blackpool. I moved to Devon when I was a little girl with my family – since I can remember, I have always lived by the sea. I grew up in Instow on the north coast, then moved to Croyde. North Devon is such a beautiful place. The coastline is rugged, open and wild, and it feels very free. A place can be special, but it’s also so much about the people, and it’s a tight-knit community here. In 2017, Justine Warner was artist in residence at the Yorkshire Arboretum. The tree pictures that she produced from a year’s unlimited access to the arboretum have a hint of Hockney about them. As well as trees Justine also loves the coast, especially the stretch between Whitby and Sandsend – ‘a favourite for walks with my two dogs, followed by fish and chips on the beach’. At art college, Justine specialised in 3D art followed by a degree in interior design. She then trained to become a teacher. For almost 30 years she’s been teaching Design, Technology and Food.
