As someone who was born just south of Birmingham and who grew up in the East Midlands, the coastline of the UK has, unsurprisingly, always held a special allure for me, even as a child. It was perhaps the fact that a family trip to the beach involved a round trip of a minimum of four hours that made going to the coast seem so special. Once I started my career as a journalist, I did eventually manage to edge a little closer to the shore by working in Suffolk and then Essex, but it was only when I moved to north Devon 25 years ago that, at last, I found myself living near to the sea. Thirty years ago, Whitstable was a rather nondescript town on the north Kent coast, licking its wounds. The fishing industry, upon which it once relied, had declined dramatically and investment was hard to come by. But food, drink and its unspoilt charms have seen tourism emerge as its saving grace. Established in 1984, the Turner Prize is sometimes controversial, often provocative and always interesting. The £25,000 prize is awarded to a British artist for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation of their work. The Marine Conservation Society campaigns for clean seas and beaches, sustainable fisheries, and protection of marine life. Through education, community involvement and collaboration, the charity raises awareness of the many threats that face our seas and promotes individual, industry and government action to protect the marine environment. Someone was hurling carpet tacks at me. At least that’s what it sounded like through my coat’s hood. The path had become a stream and my boots squelched with every step. No wonder no-one else was out walking. Yet the wildness of it all - wind so strong it was difficult to stand - made me yelp with excitement. Walking is good for us. I don’t think I would ever want to not have a home by the sea. I just love it. I was born and brought up in Ramsgate and when you grow up in a seaside town you are a part of the holidays or day-trips that visitors seek. I used to go round the arcades and play on the slot machines just like someone who was visiting. Founded in 2010, Cove Gallery was bought by Geraldine and Paul Mooney four years ago, when they relocated from Manchester to Weymouth. When Saskia Sills says she grew up in Cornwall, one immediately reasons she is so good at her sport because she hit the surf off the county’s iconic beaches from the get-go, taking to the waters like a natural.
