I have lost count of the number of times people have asked me, as editor of Coast, where my favourite beach is. And I always answer the question with a question, namely: “That depends, what are you looking for?” Because naming your favourite beach is, in my opinion, utterly dependent on the circumstances around your visit. If you want a fabulous family day out, pootling in shallow waters and with lots of facilities at hand, then you might visit Bigbury-on-Sea - as we did recently with our grandchildren - because this lovely stretch of sands certainly ticks all those boxes. DURDLE DOOR BEACH, DORSET Having an iconic Portland limestone arch certainly helps to draw the crowds (and their smartphones) to this stand-out spot on the west Dorset coast. If you’re in these parts, you have to pay a visit. The only trouble is, lots of people will probably have the same idea, especially in the summer. If you want a more uninterrupted view, visit between September and May when it’s a lot quieter. Durdle Door and its pair of shingle beaches are at the foot of a steep path, followed by a set of wooden steps. Where the coast conjures up images of high cliffs, windswept views, wildlife and nature, the seaside is a human landscape dedicated to pleasure and fun. Many different things go into making it so and the Seaside Heritage Network has come up with a way to celebrate that variety - but we need your help. It has been five years in the making, but Greys is a stunning house on the South West Coast Path, and has become the perfect home for architect Julie-Ann Clements and husband Richard. The couple already lived in the Devon village of Lympstone, and were looking for a home with a view when they spotted a dilapidated bungalow on the market. “We didn’t really want to leave the village, but we couldn’t find anything that was within the price range that we wanted,” says Julie-Ann. “We had come to the conclusion that we were going to need to move out of Lympstone in order to make enough money to be able to move back.” After a few disappointments, they were the first to see an uninspiring bungalow in need of…

YACHT SHOW IS A BIG SUCCESS More than 70 boats from over 40 brands came together to produce an impressive display at the latest British Motor Yacht Show. Visitors were able to view a wide range of motorboats, dayboats and RIBs from many international brands, represented by their UK dealers. From jet skis and tenders to 80-foot motor yachts – there was something to suit most boating desires. 1 ROYAL CONNECTIONS In this Coronation year, there will be plenty to celebrate at the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta. Established in 1822, it is one of the oldest events of its kind in the country. Queen Victoria bestowed the Royal title when she visited with Prince Albert in 1856. The late Queen Elizabeth had a special affection for Dartmouth – it was where she met Prince Philip – and she became patron in her Platinum Jubilee Year, 2022. I had an idyllic childhood in Jersey, spending what seemed like endless summer days jumping waves, building castles and exploring rock pools. My husband loves the sea also, so our family holidays have always been firmly based around the beach. When our daughters were at primary school we spent many half-term breaks in the Isle of Wight – a beautiful place that frequently reminds me of the carefree innocence of my childhood. By the age of 14, Katie McCabe had seen more of the British coastline than most of us will experience in a lifetime because in 2021 the talented teenager became the youngest person ever to sail solo around Britain. Katie made 36 stops on her 1,600 nautical mile anticlockwise voyage and experienced the best, and the worst, of times from a pod of “glowing torpedoes” (dolphins) following her boat for almost ten hours in the Bristol Channel to long, miserable spells sailing in soaking wet clothes and feeling “very, very alone”. In 2013, Penny Morrison and Dale Maloney moved from Brighton to Northumberland to be closer to family and to try a more rural, low-key lifestyle. Leaving city life and jobs behind them, they took on the challenge of running an art gallery in their new village of Alnmouth on the coast. As we race headlong into what the locals here call ‘silly season’, I would like to draw your attention to something that bugs me about August at the coast. Some people get stressed by meeting caravans on narrow lanes or not being able to get a table in a restaurant. Others might moan about feeling that their town isn’t theirs anymore. All are legitimate concerns and can score well on the bug-o-meter, of course, but we do have to accept that peak season is a part of life for a coastal town. But those kinds of gripes are not for me.
