It doesn’t take a great leap of the imagination to picture days of old on Dorset’s Mudeford Quay, times of seafaring folk, weathered fishermen making their living from the sea and smugglers intent on shipping their illegal wares into the harbour. Confession time: it wasn’t my first rodeo when it came to sleeping in a horsebox! The Kent seaside town of Folkestone has seen many incarnations over the past 200 to 300 years. The town started life as a small fishing harbour and then, following the arrival of the railway in the 1840s, became a genteel Victorian resort. By the beginning of the 20th century, it was a popular holiday destination among royalty and the British elite and attracted creatives, like Agatha Christie, who wrote Murder on the Orient Express from the town’s Grand Hotel. Just over a decade ago, Amy Fleuriot-Reade, an artist and designer, and Bee Friedmann, a specialist in sourcing products from rural artisan communities, started selling arts and crafts from a stall in Broadway Market, East London. They sold jewellery, woven baskets and hand-carved wooden utensils. In 2017, they decided to open a proper shop in the historic seaside town of Margate. I went to the beach at dawn. The surf was small and clean and the wind was blowing offshore, making the waves stand up tall before they broke with a snap. Perfect conditions. Sadly, the offshore wind had also blown some of the debris from nearby beach cafes onto the top of the beach, where it sat in sad clumps on the sand. Among the debris were sauce sachets, the packaging from biscuits given out with coffees and paper napkins. I stopped to pick up the mess before going in the water.
