First issued in 2016, the Beatrix Potter 50p coins became hugely popular thanks to the subject – thousands of us grew up reading about the cheeky bunny and his friends – and the growing appeal of collecting 50p coins, sparked by the ambitious London 2012 Olympics 50p series. HOW MANY BEATRIX POTTER 50P COINS ARE THERE? The first Beatrix Potter 50p coins were released in 2016 to mark 150 years since the famous writer and illustrator’s birth. The £2 coin was first produced in 1997, although they were not put into circulation until 1998, and since then there have been many different designs featured on the reverse (tails side) of the coin. The coin was Britain’s first bi-metallic coin for over 300 years (the outer ring is made from copper, zinc and nickel, and the inner disc from copper and nickel) and is the country’s highest denomination in circulation. The initial design, by Bruce Rushin, was an abstract image symbolising the history of technological achievement, with the text ‘TWO POUNDS’ above and the year below. As the UK’s most collected coin, it was great to see three more 50p designs released into circulation in 2020. These include the Withdrawal from the European Union 50p, often called the ‘Brexit 50p’, the Diversity Built Britain 50p and this year’s Royal Shield 50p. We’ve updated the Change Checker 50p Mintage Chart with these new additions to show you which 50ps you should be looking out for. The rarest of the trio to be released is the Withdrawal from the EU 50p, commonly known as the Brexit 50p, with a circulating mintage of 10,001,000. This is closely followed by the Diversity Built Britain 50p with a mintage of 10,300,000. These numbers are fairly high for commemorative coins, meaning you stand a good chance of finding these in your change.…

SELLING FOR 200 TIMES FACE VALUE Bidders have driven phenomenal prices for the Kew Gardens 50p on eBay, which continues to sell at almost 200 times face value. Those that have come across the Kew Gardens 50p have the opportunity to make a tasty profit, with our eBay Tracker figures showing the average sold price for the coin at £97, with some in good condition still selling for over £100! However, there are chancers out there that have been seen to list the coin for eye watering amounts in the thousands! Whilst a coin might be listed for a high price, it is actually unlikely to have sold for this amount. H.G. WELLS £2 – BLANK ‘ERROR’ This £2 coin was issued as part of the 2021 UK Commemorative Coin set and it marks the 75th anniversary of the death of science fiction novelist, H.G. Wells. With the clue in the name, this bi-metallic coin is made up of a combination of a silver coloured cupro-nickel disc and an outer yellow nickel-brass ring. However, in the case it appears the blank used has a thicker yellow ring, much wider than what we’d see on normal £2 coins. When striking £2 coins, the first step is to punch a hole through a blank planchet to create the outer section. The inner core is taken from a different metal, sized to fit inside the outer ring. Back in 2018 The Royal Mint released 26 new 10p coins which take a tour through the alphabet exploring what it means to be British. Coin collectors were invited to follow the alphabet from the Angel of the North through to zebra crossings. HOW MANY A TO Z COINS ARE THERE? The Royal Mint initially issued 2.6 million coins in March 2018, which were quickly snapped up by eagle-eyed collectors or those curious about the coins. EDGE INSCRIPTION MIX-UP In 2020, a small collection of the 2016 Shakespeare Tragedy £2 coins were found with the wrong edge inscription on them. A mix up of blanks led to some of the Shakespeare Tragedy £2 coins being struck with the edge inscription of the First World War Army £2, which was issued in the same year. ‘Errors’ like these can occur when blanks get mixed up or aren’t properly changed over when striking a new batch of coins. This type of miss-strike isn’t very common but it can happen when coins are struck in the same year, like the 2013 London Underground £2 coins, where some were found with the incorrect edge inscriptions.
