When I received the most recent issue of Coins and read the coin finds article, I decided to look through my cup of coins where I place my change just to see what was there. More than $14.7 million in U.S. coins, currency and Americana was sold by Stack’s Bowers Galleries in its official auction for the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Winter Expo. In this column, I’m going to tell you about my efforts to trade semi key and key coins for the 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent and the 1916-D Mercury dime. When I got back into coins after my college years, these were two coins that I needed to complete their respective sets. This trading adventure began with ads I ran in the Classified section of a major numismatic periodical. The scarce to rare coin market takes two things into consideration: date scarcity and condition scarcity. Either may drive the value of a coin, or perhaps a combination of both. A recent article in another numismatic publication suggests a merger of both is currently driving the keen demand now being witnessed in the scarce to rare coin market. Regardless of if you agree or not, look at the chasm in values between MS-65 and -66 or -67 of many circulation-strike coins, and it is obvious that condition matters. This demand for quality can also be seen in modern made-for-collector coins, where a coin certified to be either Mint State or PF-70 commands a price far in excess of a coin certified to be a “69.” I will point out that…
