Recording to analogue tape is a complex process that essentially aims to squeeze the most linear recording and playback out of a bunch of mechanical components. A number of issues are involved, including tape noise, speed instability, track-to-track bleed and tape deterioration, to name a few. However, tape can saturate nicely, and its handling of transients make it a popular choice for tracking drums.
