“The best will receive a toilet roll. I have loads” I don’t mind admitting that the situation outside your studio (as I write this anyway; who knows once I’ve finished) has affected Computer Music, as it has many other businesses. And yes, before I’m hauled outside – at the correct social distance – by an outraged Twitter user, I do understand that what happens to businesses pales into insignificance compared to the personal impact that Covid 19 has had. But the situation has brought some changes to the magazine, not least that if you are reading this on the printed page, then you are one of the lucky ones (even I don’t get to do that!). Beats and Loops It sounds risky but the USP of Beats and Loops, a new drum machine and looper app, is that it can be triggered using your phone’s proximity sensor, so you can put it on the floor and ‘stomp’ above it. In doing so, you trigger fills, switch between song parts and record loops, with everything you capture automatically syncing to the current project tempo. This enables hands-free operation. The good news is that both iOS and Android users can risk a smashed screen: Beats and Loops costs $4. kovaluu.com Dolby On You’ll probably know the Dolby name, but you might not have heard of Dolby On, an app for those who want to record and livestream audio and video at higher quality. cm Tell us how Hit‘n’Mix came to be. MD “Since I was little, I’ve been curious about how everything works, from tech to biology, to the mind and perception. One of my earliest software projects involved finding a way for a computer to convert the thousands of black and white dots that make up a scanned page of text into an editable document (OCR). Leading on from that, getting a computer to play back music from scanned sheets of manuscript sounded exciting, so I launched into developing PhotoScore, which has been incredibly successful worldwide. “Creating notation from audio seemed like a natural progression, so my next work involved investigating how we hear individual notes in music. Through much trial and error, I found I could achieve the highest accuracy by…
