When Jakian Parks pulls out his camera at a Black rodeo, he isn’t just capturing a moment. The born-and-bred Oklahoman is encapsulating an identity, conveying a culture, honoring a way of life, highlighting a history that has often been overlooked. “What began as a photo series has grown into a movement,” says the 24-year-old creative turned visionary. “The Rodeo Record was created to capture the untold stories of Oklahoma’s Black rodeo community — images rooted in grit, grace, and generational pride.” A snapshot of that movement is on view at the Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center in Oklahoma City with Parks’ solo exhibition, The Black Land. THE first time I saw the late great Graham Greene on the silver screen, it wasn’t for his most notable 1990s role. It was early summer 1994, and my family of four piled into a packed theater to see Maverick at my late dad’s urging. The Misfits isn’t remembered as much for what it was as for what it became — the last film in the storied careers of two motion picture icons, Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable. Gable died just 12 days after his work on the film was completed—something studio publicists capitalized on in their promotional campaigns. Graham Greene felt slightly awkward as he settled into his supporting role for writer-director Aaron Sorkin’s fact-based 2017 film Molly’s Game. He had been cast as the presiding judge for the trial of the title character, Molly Bloom (played by Jessica Chastain), who stood accused of running a series of underground poker games for Hollywood celebrities and other high rollers. JUNE LOCKHART earned her place in the pantheon of pop culture as one of the most beloved moms in TV history with her roles in the series Lassie (1958–64) and Lost in Space (1965–68). She also appeared in the final two seasons of the long-running sitcom Petticoat Junction as Dr. Janet Craig, a character added to the show to fill the void left by the 1968 death of series lead Bea Benaderet. During her decades-long career, she guested on such TV westerns as Have Gun — Will Travel, Wagon Train, Gunsmoke, Rawhide, Branded, and Death Valley Days.
