However, with a subject like waves, although I like it to look as though you could feel the splash, I can afford to be a bit looser! Materials List Art files & canvasses • I create all my work on an iPad or my PC Ai1 Touch, using HD pure colour textures. My files are saved as uncompressed tif Commercial Art files. Average file size ranges between 100 to 250MB @300 to 400 dpi. My jpg (compressed) files are usually 20 to 35Mb in size. When selling an art package I will include both file types. Files are sent using the secure Media Cloud Service “We Transfer”. • For application to Board, I prefer fine quality 100% Belgian linen @ 420GSM, stretched over a 4cm timber frame. The wealth generated by gold and a burgeoning agricultural hinterland, coupled with a general sense of optimism that permeated the colony of Victoria during the 1880s were the main factors behind the timing of the Gallery’s founding. This boom-time ethos caused the arts to flourish throughout the young colony. This was the decade when Tom Roberts, Fred McCubbin and Louis Abrahams founded what would in time be perceived as Australia’s first ‘national’ school of painting - the Heidelberg School. Within five years, they had not only started building up a great collection of art, but had erected a purpose-built art gallery on a site in the centre of Ballarat. Beyond Caravaggio is the first major exhibition in the UK to explore the influence of Caravaggio on the art of his contemporaries and followers. Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571 – 1610) is one of the most revolutionary figures in art. His strikingly original paintings, with their intense naturalism and dramatic lighting, had a lasting impact on European art both during his lifetime and in the decades immediately following his untimely death. This exhibition looks at the ripple effect of Caravaggio’s influence on the art of his followers – artists as diverse as Orazio Gentileschi, Valentin de Boulogne, and Gerrit van Honthorst. Today we’re visiting rural Western Australian artist Catherine Kelley on her three hectare horse property, about 45 minutes’ drive south of Perth, where she lives with her husband and teenage children, horses, and a slightly scatterbrained dog (not the ones painted here). Within a few minutes of my visit, I realised that life for Catherine revolves around her family and her agisted horses’ wellbeing, and its only after these that her art takes over. Starting outside, we walked around some of the outbuildings and stables, and I thought an opening photo of Catherine with one of her horses would make a great start to this My Space article, as a photo with a horse would say more about Catherine than any words could. Michelle is a nature artist from Brisbane who has just spent the last year living in England and travelling throughout Europe. It was an amazing experience for her in so many ways, but from an artist’s perspective, it was an invaluable opportunity to immerse herself not only in the art and culture of the cities, but in the wilderness and nature that she loves so much. Henri Rousseau, known as the Customs Officer (1844–1910), is one of the most important artists of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. His works attracted not only intellectuals like Guillaume Apollinaire and collectors such as Wilhelm von Uhde, but also many artists. In his paintings he anticipated or resolved similar problems to Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, and Frida Kahlo. He was highlighted as a source of inspiration in particular by the group known as Der Blaue Reiter, headed by Vassily Kandinsky. This exhibition is in cooperation with the Musée d'Orsay in Paris on the basis of a concept prepared by Gabriella Belli (Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia) and Guy Cogeval (Musée d'Orsay). “When life gives up on you, never give up on living!” Neil Sweeny Born in Newcastle in 1959, Neil was part of the “Caucasian” Stolen Generation. His adopted family life wasn’t easy. He was given to a war-bride family and both adopted parents suffered with PTSD. His father had ailing health due to war injuries which caused significant conflicts in the family home. Neil was often bullied at school because of the adoption, but would always find solace in drawing and painting. At age 12 he was introduced to music and studied violin at the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music under the tutelage of Virtuoso Errol Collins. Despite receiving high marks in his IQ testing scores, Neil never achieved good academic results during his schooling. To escape the trauma of his…
