Vast: A collection of Prints and Drawings is Robyn Mayo’s visual record of her travels through central Australia between 1996 and 2013 when she visited Arnhem Land and the Gulf Country, the central desert areas of Rainbow Valley, Chambers Pillar, The Painted Desert and The Simpson Desert and Lake Eyre and the Flinders Rangers. The resulting works consist both of landscapes and of intimate flora and fauna studies made at each campsite. Originally from the Southern Tablelands and now Tasmanian-based, Mayo’s renderings of plants are impressionistic rather than literal and she does not regard herself as a true botanical artist. Having loved drawing ever since she could remember, Gayle Newcombe humbly recalls sitting in her room after school, copying anything that inspired her. “We moved around a lot when I was growing up, so art wasn’t always something I could do, but I tried.” Although the interest was there, Gayle did not pick up art for fifteen years, due to having young children, working fulltime and investing her spare time in breeding paint horses. A dare five years later would prove her talent for art had never faded. “I was talking to a work colleague and she dared me to draw all her horses, so I accepted. Step One I use a charcoal pencil to sketch in the outline for the hills and trees, which are to be the base for my landscape. With a small fan brush I give a light water wash to enhance the charcoal then I set it aside to let it dry. Step Two Using a medium fan brush and applying a yellow wash, I begin to block in parts of the hill tops and foreground, leaving room for the addition of more colour to be added at a later stage. The effect of this wash when blended in with the charcoal gave depth to these areas. Whilst not attempting to do the sky at this stage, I also added a touch of this wash, but once again I must allow this…

Some blending using my fingers is necessary. I also want to indicate some of the bright areas where the sun is hitting the trees. Step Two Now I add a few tree trunks and emphasise the shape of the background trees, reminding myself that cool colours will recede and warm colours will come forward. “Fresh white bread rolled into a pliable ball can be used as an eraser. Curated by Rita Lazauskas, this exhibition brings together important works by Anne Zahalka, spanning over 30 years of arts practice. In the 1980s Zahalka began a series of works that were an early example of post-modernist practices where appropriated images were invested with new meaning and where the boundaries of the photographic medium were extended to become a tool of expression and subversion beyond the documentary or narrative. Zahalka explores how idealising and romanticising the bush in early Australian art, with its heroic pioneers and new settler remains inextricably woven into the Australian mythology. “Use very light pressure with the first layers of pastel so you will be able to get more layers and create more depth and brighter pieces.” Step One Draw your dog onto either a plain piece of paper and transfer onto the pastel paper or draw straight onto your good paper (depending on your experience). I like to do a line from each corner on my paper and my photo. This helps me stay on the page and keep things in proportion, or I freehand. Animal behaviour is driven by instinct. This natural inclination gives them an aptitude for bonding, protecting and instructing their young in the way of survival and food gathering. This parental instinctive bonding by animals is every bit as committed and loving to their little babes as it is with human behaviour, bonding from one generation to another with wisdom of instruction for self preservation for the genetic pool’s survival. We can all relate to our pets’ animal behaviour in line with our own; love, companionship, ownership, jealousy and sharing, just to name a few. Malcolm Hamilton’s love of art and colour has been an important part of his life as far back as he can remember. At the age of ten and while living in Western Australia, Malcolm had the great fortune to have a teacher who saw his talent. He encouraged Malcolm to enter an all schools painting competition for which, to his astonishment, he was awarded first prize. This was certainly a wonderful accomplishment for a young, aspiring artist who simply painted what he saw, in his own style. The desire to create pictures has been with Lynda Robinson for as long as she can remember. As a child, she would while away many hours, sketching with a biro or pencil, or splashing around with a lovely watercolour paintbox that she received for Christmas. Having always been fascinated by blank paper, a trip to the newsagent with her mum was a highlight of the weekly expedition into town. “Whilst other children may have wanted to go into a lolly shop or toy shop, I just wanted to head for the newsagent where I could look at blank sketchbooks or sheets of paper and covet them!” During her childhood in the UK, Lynda remembers using pastel at primary school. “We had pastel books consisting of grey paper, with each page…

From 13 October until 7 January 2017, the Van Gogh Museum is devoting itself to ‘The Dutch in Paris 1789 - 1914. Van Spaendonck, Jongkind, Van Gogh, Van Dongen, Mondriaan.’ A major exhibition in which the work of the Dutch artists will be shown for the first time in conjunction with that of their French contemporaries. I love art. I love seeing what other artists are doing, going to galleries and exhibitions, checking out websites, seeing their work on Facebook, YouTube and elsewhere. However, even an art lover like me can get bored. I get bored when artists haven’t thought about how to give the viewer a great experience. It’s one of the first things I think about when I start work on a new piece. I don’t know if I’m always successful but what I do know is, if my new piece ends up boring, it isn’t for lack of effort.
