Lens Range The range of a lens is measured in millimetres and the range refers to the distance from the lens element to the sensor or film plane. This is often referred to as the focal length. The higher the focal length number the larger the lens and the closer it will bring the subject to you. The lower the number, the smaller the lens and the wider the viewpoint. When thinking about what lens to buy or use, you need to consider what style of image you are after. It is in this atmosphere of change that Florence Lynch and Bee Tham, sharing the same passion in conceptual art, launched LYNCH THAM, a contemporary art gallery located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, in New York City. The duo collaborated on a few projects before deciding to launch the gallery in March 2013. Between Lynch, a longtime New York gallerist, and Tham, a private art dealer once based in Asia, the pair double teams the primary and secondary art markets successfully, rapidly gaining traction in the art world. Over the course of a few months of travel in the UK, Europe and America I took thousands of photos while travelling. For the most part these were standard travel photos of landmarks, monuments and streetscapes but I was drawn to the textures that existed in the cities. On every city block there were an infinite amount of these amazing little abstracted compositions. I did get a few strange looks when shooting a close up image of a plain wall but hey, nothing out of the ordinary for photographers. To shoot this type of thing you do not need a specific type of camera, for these images I shot mainly with an iPhone 4s as it was always on me and it had geotagging (GPS location). With a humble gratitude for his early life, this artist generously shares with us his philosophy of art and life. If I am one, being an artist is nothing like what I imagined - I have never been starving, I have never set up an easel in a picturesque garden, and I don’t believe that what I paint speaks for itself. On the contrary, I have family who have relentlessly supported me through all of my endeavours, allowing me to spend my days comfortably amidst my other passion: medicine. Frank Miles was born in Salisbury, Rhodesia (now Harare, Zimbabwe) in 1946; raised on a farm on the outskirts of Bulawayo and now resides in Alstonville, New South Wales. Frank’s family was involved in dairy and crop farming, so he grew up with an inherent relationship and connection to all types of domestic animals - and also developed a deep love and admiration for wildlife. When he returned home from boarding school for the holidays, Frank would be out all day on his own, exploring the bushveld and witnessing the many nuances of nature. Using her Mum’s advice, “if you are going to do something, do your best or don’t do anything at all”, has ensured this talented artist always goes the extra mile. Mum and Dad, Joanna and John Ulijn, moved to Australia in 1953 from a town called Oss in the Netherlands with my sister Mieke. We all have our heroes in life, yours could be an actor, author, maybe a musician, or just someone you admire for their achievements in life, me I’m not much of a movie buff or avid reader, true I do have quite a mixed collection of music l play when I’m my studio, and one or two favorite artists, but many of my personal heroes in life are fine artists, and in this studio article I’m visiting one in friend and outstanding Western Australian artist Mike Vandeleur at his studio in Safety Bay just south of Perth. Materials • Stretched canvas • Oil and/or acrylic paints • Mongoose hair brushes – Filbert and Round (ranging in size from 00 to 12) • HB pencil • Gum eraser With just a few materials, this artist created a fabulous portrait. Step One I photocopied the photo used as inspiration and the copy was photocopied again and so forth until a stark, high contrast was achieved. Following this, I used the picture as a guide and freehand sketched an outline onto the primed canvas with pencil. Step Two Using black acrylic paint I started to fill in the canvas using the sketch as a guide. To avoid smudging the graphite I do not place my hand on the canvas for stability. Materials • Acid free Bainbridge board • Black waterproof ink • Tracing paper • Rotring pens: No. 0.25, 0.35, 0.4 • Pencils • Drop of watercolour Step One Research your subject; take field sketches from real life, backed up with your own photographic references. Step Two Draw up and sketch your layout and arrange your plant rough sketch to fit, making notes on detail and colour. Step Three Once you draw up your full layout, take a tracing and transfer your sketch down on your board surface, giving a faint clean guide line, and start penning in your illustration.
