SAM CANDIDLY ADMITS that she only started making jewellery by chance. Her younger daughter Natalie used to be quite heavy-handed with her little bracelets and necklaces, and Sam was constantly fixing all the bits and pieces. Sam found she enjoyed working with the jewellery, and decided she wanted to make some pieces for herself. She quickly discovered that she could instantly deconstruct a piece of jewellery in her mind, just by looking at it, and work out how it was made, step by step. DEFINED AS A FORM of decorative knotting, macramé has been used for centuries, with carvings of the Assyrians and Babylonians depicting the use of knots for decorations, and from around 1200AD the Arabs began to use an early form of the western macramé we still use today. Macramé knotting was also used by the Chinese, the Egyptians and the Peruvians. In the 1400s the term ‘macramé’ was used in the Arabic culture to mean ‘a shawl that protects the head’ while in Turkish it means the knotted fringe on towels and linen. It is derived from the early practice of knotting a fringe to a solid fabric in a continuation of knotted patterns, and also evolved into entire pieces of knotted fabrics being created. BEFORE THE PARTY Invitations need to be sent out to tell everyone about your celebration, so to set your invitations apart, why not add some beads! Beads can either be sewn or glued onto invitations; however there are drawbacks to both methods. Sewing beads onto paper leaves tell-tale holes from the needle, but this can be minimised by using clusters of beads threaded through the one hole. Glue can leave sticky marks or discolour paper, especially if it’s thin or has a fabric content to it; a spot test on a small sample piece of paper is the best way to find the right glue for the job, and if you use a toothpick to apply the glue, you’re less likely to have unwanted glue marks.
