Multiply this by the number of designs in a project, and it's easy to see that an embroidery machine does a lot of work in a comparatively short amount of time. The following steps help keep your machine looking and sewing its best between trips to a professional service technician. Some owner's manuals state “no need to oil.” This is because the parts that need to be lubricated are only accessible by opening the machine, or they're self-lubricating. For warranty purposes, this is best left to your service technician. This person has been trained in the proper way of opening a computerized machine to prevent damage to mechanical parts and the circuit boards. For normal use, under 40 hours a week, a once-a-year visit to the service technician is sufficient. Machines that are working over 40 hours a week should be serviced twice a year. How did you get started with embroidery? My grandmother taught me how to sew when I was very little, so I have sewn for as long as I can remember. My grandmother was an amazing seamstress who taught herself how to sew out of necessity. She grew up motherless and poor, and she wanted to have more than one dress to wear. So she started making her own. Every year for Christmas she would buy me fabric and a pattern that we would sew together. It was the perfect gift. Start small before working up to table runners, wall hangings, and quilts. The basic steps, however, are the same. • Place a square of lightweight cutaway stabilizer in the hoop. UNDERSTANDING LACE EMBROIDERY There are two basic types of machine embroidered lace. The two types are digitized differently from each other. The first type is digitized to be embroidered on a backing of some sort of sheer or semi-sheer material such as tulle or organza. These laces are often very airy in design, frequently featuring lightweight stitching and large, open areas between motifs. Backed laces are stitched using a wash-away stabilizer—but because of their delicate, open nature they require at least a small amount of structure left behind to hold the design together. The second type of machine embroidered lace is called freestanding lace. Freestanding lace is digitized so that the lace is entirely self-supporting after the stabilizer is removed.
