Longtime Newport, Rhode Island, sailor Bob Morton was telling war stories to his grandson, Ty, this past winter, and just like that, with a click or two of a mouse, the two were staring face-to-face at an old family friend. Bob comes from a racing family that spent the 1970s and ’80s tearing up the waters of Newport and Annapolis, Maryland, with Brigadoon III, a 57-foot Sparkman & Stephens raceboat that was launched as Equation in 1968 and bought and renamed by Bob’s father in 1972. It is our 11-ton daysailer here on Lake Erie while I pick away at a four-year refit. The boat has surprising performance in lighter air when sailed as a sloop rig. MONTHLY MAINTENANCE To better understand corrosion, check out a galvanic-series chart. It organizes metals from most noble (most corrosion-resistant, or cathodic) to least noble (least corrosion-resistant, or anodic). Depending on the source, the series might be organized with cathodic metals either at the top or bottom; the version included in the American Boat and Yacht Council Standards establishes the most-cathodic metals at the bottom, where the kings of corrosion resistance (graphite, platinum and titanium, among others) reside. At the top end of the series, the most corrosion- prone metals (magnesium, zinc and aluminum) will be found. The chart is available online with a simple search for “galvanic series.” Aluminum is among the most corrosion- prone metals. Is it all about the destination or the journey? If judged by the new models introduced last fall at the U.S. Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Maryland, we are a nation divided. Favoring the being-there side of the proposition are the many luxurious new boats featuring interiors with homelike appliances and transoms transformed into entertainment centers with built-in grills, fridges, sinks and couches. In Spitsbergen, at the halfway point of his self-described eastabout “world’s slowest circumnavigation,” it was decision time for retired Aussie physician John Vallentine: Sail his Peterson 46, Tainui, south along the endless Norwegian coast or roll the dice and voyage down Russia’s Volga River to the Black Sea. By choosing the latter, Tainui is thought to be the first foreign-flagged vessel to make the journey in the past century. To make the trip possible, Vallentine turned to the Internet to find local crew, and there he met what would turn out to be his perfect traveling companion, Moscow-based attorney and sailor Maxine Maters. Ah, Orokawa Bay. This anchorage might not be the best-known corner of New Zealand’s lovely Bay of Islands, but it sure came in handy during a late spring gale. We’d spent six memorable months cruising New Zealand, and it was time to head north for the winter. But when the weather didn’t cooperate, we delayed our departure while waiting (and waiting, and waiting) for a favorable weather window to Fiji. That window proved elusive, however, and instead of heading north for the tropics, we found ourselves hunkering down as low after low pelted North Island. In late 1984, with 2,000 miles of California sea trials and easy Baja California cruising behind her, Taleisin could no longer be called a new boat. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to sail with some remarkable sailors. However, until last March, during the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, I’d never sailed with somebody I’d truly call inspirational. But then I got the chance to race aboard a Dufour 455 in the bareboat-charter class with a Floridian sailor named Brad Kendell.
