● I gave birth to my daughter, Orla, in 2018. I was very open-minded about how long it would take me to return to racing. ● If we could choose a European race weekend to visit, one where we could watch the best do battle on a legendary course and also ride it ourselves, then Belgium’s Tour of Flanders, or De Ronde van Vlaanderen to give its local name, would be right up there. On the Saturday (1 April), 16,000 amateurs descended on Oudenaarde – the epicentre of the pro race – to ride 75km, 144km and 177km routes along the pro route in the Tour of Flanders Cyclo (some rode the longest 242km course and started in Bruges). ● As we’ve come to expect from top Swedes Thule (pronounced ‘too-lee’), the 27L Paramount commuter backpack is practical, durable and full of neat cycling-specific touches. These include the frontal opening for a bike lock and helmet, an enclosed hi-vis rain cover, stash areas for bottles and a covered eyewear/valuables compartment at the top. The laptop area is sizeable and reinforced, and the main compartment has room for my cycling kit and trove of snacks and sandwiches. 01 HOW DO I STAY INJURY FREE? Vulnerable areas The parts of the body most at risk of injury, particularly for cyclists, are the back and knees. A bike fit with a reputable fitter is vital. The fitter should be looking at seat settings, cleat positioning, and reach and lever position – the three contact points between you and the bike that will each have a knock-on effect on the other. Avoid overload A very common contributing factor to overuse injuries is the rider’s training load. Big increases in volume or intensity (or both) can trigger injury if they’re not managed correctly, so an increase should be introduced very gradually. Bike by Pink Floyd This is the last track of Pink Floyd’s debut album, ‘The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.’ In the song, Pink Floyd generously offers to give a girl their bike that has “a basket, a bell that rings and things to make it look good”. Unfortunately, their generosity’s somewhat misplaced because the bike is borrowed. Tour de France by Kraftwerk Kraftwerk’s dedication to the world’s biggest bike race epitomised their love of the sport.
