High-altitude Colorado is the unofficial home of American road racing, with many of its famous alumni, such as Taylor Phinney and Tyler Hamilton, living here during their careers, as well as much of its media. Specifically, it’s the city of Boulder, which offers easy access to the Rocky Mountains, where the industry took hold. The Rockies are vast, stretching 3,000 miles from Canada to the state of New Mexico, which borders Mexico. But in Colorado, road cycling–and now gravel–the sport found its sweet spot, with steepling altitudes, a superb summer climate (not to mention a great snow sports heritage in winter) and a lively 100,000-population city in the foothills.
