November is the time for sweet fruits, but my particular joy is when yams start to make a regular appearance on grocery shelves. Growing up with yams has really left a lasting impression on me, creating a love of root vegetables, not only for the awesome yams that come from our land, but also from around the world. There are so many yams with amazing flavours, and their rainbow colours add natural food colouring in every dish. Potatoes have been done to death, so why not try yams?
You’ll be surprised how many varieties there are, and how many are native to Australia, from oca yams to candy yams, purple yams, cassava, taro, long yams, bush yams, murnong yam daisy… the list goes on!
