I grew up in an idyllically sleepy coastal town in southern Australia, a short walk from a beautiful beach. But from a less-than-perfect childhood was born the want — rather, the need — to make everything around me ‘perfect’, and a love for all things design was born. Despite our closeness to the water, I was one of those weird kids who spent far too many hours inside reading — and drawing and designing my dream home. Complete Works 1975–Today by Philip Jodidio (taschen) At over 700 pages, this tome is the most up-to-date catalogue of the work of Japan’s Tadao Ando, the only architect to have won the Pritzker, Carlsberg, Praemium Imperiale and Kyoto prizes. Following an extended introductory essay by TASCHEN regular and former Connaissance des Arts editor Philip Jodidio is a chronological ordering of 63 projects that form an extraordinary oeuvre. Each project is comprehensively illustrated with an explanatory blurb, hand sketches, architectural drawings and a mix of colour and black-and-white photography. Nestled within a betel nut plantation fringed by rainforests on Havelock Island in India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Jalakara is a 740-square-metre, seven-room boutique villa hotel that encourages barefoot luxury and relaxation in the tropics. Before Jalakara evolved to become an exclusive resort, British entrepreneur Mark Hill had planned on building the villa as a five-bedroom holiday home where he and his family could escape the English winters. Hill later decided to add two bedrooms and run the property as a boutique hotel instead, hiring Karnatakabased architect Ajith Andagere of Andagere Architects to help him bring his vision to life. On sitting down with Ian Schrager to talk about the new Times Square EDITION, two things become immediately apparent: one, he is a living encyclopaedia of the cultural history of his city; and two, there’s almost nothing about the hotel that lacks his stamp. That includes the design, a collaboration with Yabu Pushelberg. Guest rooms are kept tastefully minimal, in line with Schrager’s belief that ‘the room is supposed to be a sanctuary where you sleep and eat and bathe’. Here that means beige and white predominate, with a simple palette of natural materials like oak, larch, wool and metal accents. A native pandanus tree grows through the double-height living space of the island home that creative director Dan Mitchell shares with his wife Hilda and two young children. It’s one of many features that helps to soften the stark concrete walls and bring a familial feel to the 500-square-metre, three-bedroom residence in coastal Canggu. Outside, Paulo Mendes da Rocha-inspired concrete overhangs add to the angular, industrial exterior, and stand in abrupt contrast to the overgrown garden and rice paddies beyond. Work Shop, Melbourne Just next door to her eponymous design studio in the inner suburb of Collingwood, acclaimed Melbourne-based interior designer Fiona Lynch has opened a space known simply as Work Shop. Lynch describes the space as a ‘curatorial showcase of experimental design, fine art and objects from leading local and international artists and designers.’ Known for her artistic approach to interior design and her award-winning projects, Lynch says Work Shop is the realisation of a long-held dream, inspired by her early career in fine art. While other children were spending their pocket money on comics, Jin Chen was buying interior design books. Since he was young, he’s loved beautiful spaces, and now — after only three years in the role — his knack for creating them has earned him a place as one of Taiwan’s brightest young designers. It all began with his first apartment, and the independence that came with it: ‘It was the first time I had a chance to decorate my own space, and the first time I could think about what kind of furniture I actually wanted. Eunice Cheung had been working as an interior architect in Hong Kong for over a decade when she decided to move into retail. ‘Having spent so much time sourcing materials and finishes myself, I was very interested in designing and creating them,’ she says. Travelling to Shishi-Iwa House at night is quite the experience. A drive through dark countryside, redolent of pine even in the early spring thaw, gives way to a beacon, the property’s cathedral-like facade of glass puncturing the blackness with its warm light. Once inside, it’s immediately obvious that the Shigeru Ban Architects-designed property isn’t an ordinary hotel. There’s a certain ambience that can only be created in smaller, more intimate spaces. Good bones, high ceilings, timber floors — it doesn’t actually take much. But nowadays these modest spaces and elements are often overlooked in favour of the larger, the newer and the more sterile. This is not the case, however, in Ivan Pun’s petite yet utterly charming Yangon home. Located on the city’s outskirts, in an estate that even Pun describes ‘not cool’, is the 1990s-era bungalow he’s turned into his home-away-from-Hong Kong. Sandy Point is one of those small Victorian beachside towns that swells with out-oftowners in the summertime. It’s relatively unaffected by the coastal housing boom, and the untouched coastline and good surfing conditions make it all the more appealing as a weekend getaway spot. Aldo Bakker The launch of Dutch designer Aldo Bakker’s Slow Motion collection marks his first solo exhibition with Carpenters Workshop Gallery, New York. The collection and show comprise ten never-before-seen pieces, each an expression of his eternal quest for the perfect object. Amid the slew of hotels and entertainment complexes rising in the reclaimed area south of Roxas Boulevard in Manila, a pre-war mansion has stood its ground for almost a century, surviving both the tragic bombing of Manila and the city’s propensity for demolition in the name of progress. Left abandoned for decades, this grand dame has now been painstakingly and faithfully restored, ready to be reintroduced to society as Palacio de Memoria. The home’s provenance remains a mystery, but it dates back to the 1930s, when Manila was the cosmopolitan Pearl of the Orient and ancestral mansions like these lined the bayside. Trust award-winning Hong Kong interior designer Joyce Wang to devise a magical exhibition for Louis Vuitton’s 2019 Objets Nomades exhibition. Within the former Central Magistracy at Tai Kwun — a heritage and arts complex on the site of Hong Kong’s former Central Police Station — Wang presented the iconic French fashion brand’s latest collection of limited-edition furniture, lighting and home accessories in a building-within-a-building, using translucent mesh walls to create rooms and transform the historic building into a surreal grand mansion. Located in the once-gritty inner-city district of Fortitude Valley in Brisbane, an area the locals refer to simply as ‘The Valley’, is The Calile, the first real urban resort down under. Here, local architectural practice Richards and Spence have seemingly taken inspiration from the mid-century modernist architecture of Palm Springs and turned it on its head with an entirely modern Australian twist that fills a redeveloped urban block. Poetic, experimental, surreal, nature-inspired.
