WOULD YOU BELIEVE this is a simple bath for two in Parkdale and not a high-end Scandinavian spa? Indeed, it belongs to a renovated 1900s bay-and-gable home, one that had been split up into apartments. A space-doubling addition allowed The Practice of Everyday Design to create a serene Nordic retreat, its interior clad floor to ceiling in soothing maple and white oak, and furnished throughout with both monolithic forms and intricate detailing. Upstairs, where once there was a flat-sized kitchen and a tiny loo is now a new master suite with a footprint divided almost equally into sleeping and bathing quarters. The snow-white, 12.5-square-metre bathroom steps up from the bedroom, enclosed by a sliding barn door built by M-Squared Contracting. Inside, a half wall – periwinkle on one side –…

CREAMY PINK FLAT-SAWN OAK, ladyfinger-shaped tiles and grey marble with mousse-like patterning: if this renovation were a cake, its master bath would be the icing. It will be difficult to keep hands from running across every surface of this space, situated in the previously unused attic of a Yorkville Victorian. But this was no easy feat for architect Anya Moryoussef. The house is heritage listed, and its rooflines could not be changed. The 15-square-metre bathroom is set partially inside a cathedral-roofed, bayed dormer, so Moryoussef had to maximize the triangulated roof spaces and existing window locations. A vanity wall divides the room into two distinct zones, drawing a U-shaped flow from the least to the most private bathroom functions. The toilet was set to the side in a private room,…

“We like to ask: Why isn’t this possible? Why doesn’t this exist?” AS LIGHTING DESIGNERS, Christian Lo and David Ryan were up to their elbows in bedazzled chandeliers and custom lighting systems – some with steep price tags – when reality hit them hard. “The objects were out of touch with what we prefer aesthetically, and what we could afford ourselves,” says Lo, realizing that she still had a bare lightbulb hanging from a junction box in her own apartment kitchen. AS SEASONED ARCHITECTS AND DESIGNERS, Megan Cassidy and Jane Son are used to tooling structures right down to their nuts and bolts. Starting their own hardware business was a natural step for the long-time friends, who often struggled to find distinctive architectural components for their projects. Enter Casson Hardware – a treasure trove of gemlike hardware culled from around the world. “Our tastes are eclectic, but lean toward the modern and minimal,” says Son of the online boutique’s curios. “And our focus is on the quality and crafting of the materials; we look for what could be heirloom-quality pieces.” That includes Shayne Fox’s tumbled bronze knobs produced in Toronto, and Oji Masanori’s delicate brass hooks crafted in Japan. “COULD WE BRING THIS AESTHETIC into high-density Toronto?” asked Adam Ochshorn, co-principal of Curated Properties – wondering aloud if he could incorporate elements of the modern country vernacular he enjoyed in Muskoka into Cabin, a tiered condo he developed for West Queen West. And so Mason Studio, known for modernizing the concept of national identity without the corniness, was tapped for interior design. Their solution to the 7.5-square-metre bathroom was a linear plan, corralling wet functions (shower and tub) in one area, and the vanity, partitioned from the toilet, in another. “I don’t believe in the ultimate idea of perfection.” EVERY ARTIST OR DESIGNER entertains a dialogue with their materials. For some, the conversation remains covert. For Julia Dault, it becomes the art itself. Untitled 39, 9:30-11:50 AM, September 26, 2017 is one of her latest sculptures in which sheets of Formica and Plexiglas are bent to energetic curves, then harnessed with ropes and Everlast boxing wrap. Untitled 1 was her first piece exhibited, the thesis produced in 2008 for her MFA at Parsons School of Design. IN TORONTO’S TRICKY URBAN CONDITIONS, Studio Junction deftly makes magic, preserving a sense of architectural integrity while leaving its signature on infill houses and classic brick piles. Founding architects Peter Tan and Christine Ho Ping Kong are known for their warm, modern and subtly surprising spaces, often with a Japanese influence, and always articulated with perfect millwork.
