Depending on your location, climatic conditions could mean that foggy spells are quite rare and fleeting. An international competition for photographers aged 24 or under, the Ian Parry Photojournalism Grant is awarded to a project that addresses an important issue related to the human condition. In 2023, the recipient was Nikoletta Stoyanova from Donetsk in Ukraine. Her portfolio of images included this one of police checking a man’s military papers during a break in Odesa. Having grown up in a family that passed a photographic tradition down through the generations, Stoyanova took up the medium when she was 15 and enrolled on a photojournalism degree when she was 17. Working as a photojournalist in the Odesa region when the Russian invasion began in 2022, Stoyanova resolved to stay and document everything that happened. Some of that goes on traditional marketing channels, including advertising, product photography and promotional materials. Increasingly, creators and reviewers are included in that budget, through direct partnerships and sponsorship, as well as indirect spend through press trips and events. www.panasonic.com The original Panasonic Lumix G100 was launched in 2020 as an entry point to the Lumix mirrorless camera range and with an emphasis on vlogging features, notably a vari-angle screen and an advanced mic array for recording in different situations. The Lumix G100D is a newer variant that is more of a maintenance release than a new camera. The fundamental features and design haven’t changed and there are just two differences; the EVF has dropped in resolution from 3.68 million dots to 2.36 million, but has swapped from TFT technology to OLED – so the screen is better. www.sony.co.uk Everybody loves ‘trinity’ wide-angle, standard and telephoto f/2.8 zoom lenses, right? Actually, you can count me out. Especially for mirrorless cameras, I prefer ‘slower’ f/4 zooms that are smaller, more lightweight and better balanced for relatively slimline bodies. When I feel the need for speed, I switch to a prime lens. Following in the footsteps of the Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 G standard zoom, the 16-25mm redresses the balance, giving a fairly fast f/2.8 aperture throughout its zoom range, but with a relatively small and light build. Something has to give, naturally, and the zoom range itself is more restrictive than usual in both lenses. Running until 20 October, it is one of the strands in a six-part series of programming that considers the question ‘What is Truth’? As the need for huge castles declined, noblemen and landowners looked imposing but more comfortable to live in. Medieval manor houses were based around a great hall with private spaces for the owner and rooms for the household workers. By the time of the Tudors, the dissolution of the monasteries in the late 1530s saw former ecclesiastical properties added to the wealth of noble families, which in turn, led to a boom in housebuilding. Imposing defences were no longer needed, resulting in large windows and open aspects. The stately home, built and owned by the ruling upper classes, became a statement of wealth and power. If you want to unlock the creative potential of your camera, then Manual mode is the way to go. While the semi-automatic Aperture and Shutter Priority modes can help out by making some of the core exposure settings, Manual mode takes off the stabilisers so that getting the settings right for total creative freedom is completely up to you. But this extra power comes with responsibility, and it will be down to you if the image doesn’t come out correctly. The ISO controls how sensitive your camera will be to light. or digital noise creeping into your shots. The base ISO setting is usually around 100 on most cameras and has the best image quality. But there are times when boosting the ISO is necessary – for example, when you require a fast enough shutter speed to shoot handheld in poor lighting, such as shots inside dark and dimly lit music venues or for astrophotography. The good news is that high ISO noise performance has become better over recent years and many modern digital cameras produce perfectly usable images at ISO 1600, with many cameras handling even higher ISOs perfectly fine, too. 1 Flick the MF switch Most cameras will have a physical AF/MF switch on the lens or camera body. On kit lenses such as the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens (above), it’s on the lens barrel so flick it to MF to begin focusing manually. Keep IS switches engaged if shooting handheld or switch them off on a tripod. 2 Focus peaking Many modern cameras, such as the Canon EOS R6 (above), have a focus-peaking function. The new Remove tool in Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw features a brilliant new generative AI mode. It can now employ machine learning to remove unwanted objects from your images. Most older retouching tools work by sampling the surrounding pixels, copying and re-using the data from nearby to fill in the area you define. This was once considered cutting-edge but, these days, it is almost primitive in comparison with these new AI-powered tools. For quick fixes, the new Remove tool can be used in the same way as before. However, for larger areas, we can check the AI box and it will generate new pixels not only by analysing the surroundings but also by recognising the image’s content. When faced with a landscape scene that is to stop down to f/22 to get as much depth of field as possible. Now while that isn’t wrong, the problem is that, at f/22, the lens isn’t as sharp as it is at f/5.6 or f/8. One alternative is to use an f/8 aperture but to take multiple photos, focusing at different depths into the scene. 1 Set your focal distance Look on your lens and this should say the minimum focus distance and the distance at which it’s set to infinite focus. On the lens used here, the minimum was around 0.5m and the infinite focus distance was about 4m. So the idea is to take photos at the minimum and infinite focus distances, and one somewhere in the middle.…

An exposure can be boiled down to three core parameters that determine how well exposed the scene is, though changing each has its own trade-offs. The three settings are shutter speed, which determines how long the shutter is open: a fast shutter speed will freeze motion still but could result in an underexposed image if there isn’t enough light, while extending the shutter speed could leave enough time for movement in your hands or moving elements such as the sky or people to become blurry. The aperture is an opening inside of the lens that can be opened or closed to restrict the light flow, though this setting also directly affects your depth of field (how much of your scene is in sharp focus). Creative mirrorless and DSLR cameras have a plethora of drive modes you can choose from that determine how quickly shots are taken in succession, whether they are delayed, quietened or even shot with the mirror locked up on a DSLR to reduce vibrations. These modes are certainly worth adjusting depending on the specific subject you are trying to shoot. For example, if you’re taking landscape photos, you may only require the standard Single Shot mode, where the camera will only fire one exposure until you press the shutter button again, or a two-second self-timer to avoid your finger press of the shutter causing camera shake. However, the sheer joy of shooting a week-old baby is often tempered by the work that needs to go into editing their skin. They give me the ability to react to unfolding photo opportunities at the flick of a wrist, rather than swapping lenses or carrying around more kit.
