Apple announced the iPhone 14 lineup of smartphones at its Far Out event in September, including the iPhone 14, 14 Plus, and the 14 Pro and Pro Max. While the base models offer modest camera updates over the iPhone 13 range, the iPhone 14 Pro offers impressive specs for keen photographers. Both Pro models can now shoot images in RAW mode (Apple calls this ProRAW), and for the first time, the iPhone 14 Pro lineup boasts a new 48MP main camera, which features a quad-pixel sensor that adapts to the image being captured. For most photos, the quad-pixel sensor combines four pixels into one large quad pixel equivalent to 2.44µm – hopefully for better low-light capture while keeping photo size at a practical 12MP. There is no question editing is one of the most important steps in the creation of photographs. But whereas post-processing can help create the perfect photo, used in the wrong way, it can also destroy your shot. Today’s editing programmes open up countless possibilities and, due to the extensive tools and their capacity for change, it’s tempting to take it to the extreme. Radical changes can be intentional, but they should underline the characteristics of your photo in a natural way by sticking to the fundamental principles. It’s good to expect the unexpected but, as a photographer, preparing for every eventuality can often mean venturing out with a huge, heavy backpack stuffed full of camera bodies, lenses and accessories. To prevent yourself from being weighed down by your kit, a single body and attached lens can often make the going much easier. Fujifilm has now announced its ground-breaking X-H2 camera at the New York X-Summit. With a new 40MP sensor, this becomes the highestresolution APS-C-sized sensor camera ever released. Furthermore, it offers internal 8K video recording at 30fps. The X-H2 looks the same as the Fujifilm X-H2S launched earlier in the year, but the use of a different fifth-generation sensor, the X-Trans CMOS 5HR, makes for some important differences. Swedish manufacturer Hasselblad has just launched its X2D 100C camera – and it’s an absolute medium-format powerhouse. Packing a 100MP medium-format, backside illuminated image sensor, the X2D delivers 15 stops of dynamic range and native 16-bit colour, as well as seven stops of in-built image stabilisation. The X2D also comes with 1TB of internal storage, which will be music to the ears of pros who forget to wipe their memory cards clean between shoots or even pack a card altogether. The X2D does not feature video recording and there are no plans for it to do so. The concept of high dynamic range (HDR) is widely used in photography. This method involves taking a series of photos at different exposure levels and merging them in post-processing. If this is done well, your image will benefit from the increased visibility of highlights and dark elements. When capturing the same scene at different exposures, it may be necessary to use a tripod. Unfortunately, this is not always possible as there are many restrictions as to when you can use one. In large crowds or at historical sites or museums, it may not be practical to set up a tripod.
