I remember that I really liked the way he smelled,” says the New York Times Magazine contributor, who also creates crossword puzzles for the paper. You might think that as an Oscar-winning actress who recently won an Emmy for her producing role in HBO’s Big Little Lies, Reese Witherspoon would look to top Hollywood stars for career inspiration. But, it turns out, her role models are refreshingly far from the red carpet. “Eleanor Roosevelt has always inspired me. She was so outspoken and astute,” says Witherspoon—who, in 2016, cofounded Hello Sunshine, a cross-platform multimedia company dedicated to telling female-driven narratives. (A true entrepreneur extraordinaire, she also launched the clothing line Draper James in 2015.) “If we don’t find something we like, we make it—a couch, a watch, linens, agendas,” explains Arthur Gerbi, who took the helm at Merci in 2013, launching an online shop along with the brand’s line of homewares and accessories. “Normally, if you make a couch, you try to do the whole collection—a chair, an ottoman, etc. We don’t. We think a couch is essential but the rest can be found elsewhere.” This measured approach to only creating what is necessary makes for a unique offering that is always evolving. A cattle barn isn’t the first place you’d expect Patrick Robinson to call home. But then again, the founder of travel clothing line Paskho (and former design lead at Armani Exchange, the Gap, and Paco Rabanne) is full of surprises. Case in point: At age 10, he taught himself to make garment patterns from newspaper and is presently crafting a Chris-Craft-style barrel-back boat by hand. Coconut Ginger Lemon Spritz Makes 4 drinks 1 knob fresh ginger, cut into chunks 16 fl oz coconut water 1 can coconut cream 1 lemon, zested 2 tsp fresh lemon juice 1 tsp honey 8 oz white rum Lemon seltzer, such as LaCroix or Spindrift 1. “You have a certain amount of space, and you can live simply within that space.” Rachel Craven doesn’t love the word restraint. It feels too uptight. Minimal and spare are too cold. “We all thought that on January 22 we would return to the work we had been doing prior to the election. But obviously that’s not what happened,” says Sarah Sophie Flicker, a national organizer of the Women’s March, of the overwhelming outpouring that took place the day after the U.S. presidential inauguration. The event turned out to be the largest peaceful protest in history, with roughly 5 million people taking to the streets around the world. Fresh from a move to our newly redesigned o∞ce in midtown Manhattan last year, our 40-person team went to work cultivating a creative oasis. The light-filled open space necessitated that we carve out distinct areas and build from the ground up—prompting a call to renovation matchmaking service Sweeten, which partnered us with general contractor Best & Company to bring our vision to life. Following a custom build-out and kitchen millwork, it was time to hone in on the decorative elements. She and her husband, photographer Christopher Mosier, along with their daughters, Scout and Esme, live on the top three floors of a mid-19th-century building filled with intricate crown moldings and grand mantelpieces. “I adore the still-intact historical details,” says Mosier. “We are just totally happy hanging out here.” A short stroll through Regent’s Park, and Mosier is at her o∞ce at Chiltern Firehouse, the 1889 fire station–turned–boutique hotel with 26 perpetually sold-out rooms. If there’s such a thing as a nomadic homebody, architect Costantino Affuso and designer Paolo Badesco fit the type. The duo travels constantly, hopping between apartments in Paris and Milan every few weeks and going on frequent buying trips around Europe. Home is where they completely unwind, stretching out on the sofa with their two Irish setters and throwing together a casual dinner, usually with opera playing in the background. Their walk-up apartment in Paris’s verdant 12th Arrondissement gives the sense of an exacting Italian modernist inhabiting a painter’s studio from the Belle Epoque.
