Meilichzon—lauded by several publications as France’s designer du jour— approached Hotel Bachaumont in Paris’s Second Arrondissement by complementing the building’s striking Art Deco structure with modern interiors that have staying power. A sunny corner displays Rachel Antonoff’s collection; the designer gets ready for a game of croquet on her new rooftop.  ON A CHANCE visit to the same building as the domino offices, womenswear designer Rachel Antonoff happened to mention her love of the magazine, and peeked her head in to ask for an introduction as soon as she realized the happy coincidence. For months she had been hoping to redesign her office. “There was always a running list of things we wanted to do, but we never seemed to have the time or the budget,” Antonoff explains. “THERE’S ALWAYS ONE DEGREE of separation from making it myself,” says Taavo Somer, referring to his up-closeand-personal approach to designing and building a space, whether a salty waterfront dive bar or a spruced-up men’s clothing shop. It’s a rare combo of talents—dreaming up ideas and putting them into action—that’s created an eclectic mini empire of dining, drinking, and lifestyle spots scattered across lower Manhattan, each with real character and charm. In October, Somer launches Freemans, a book covering more than a decade of his work, including essays on design, interiors, and style, as well as a handful of favorite recipes. PERHAPS THE MOST STRIKING ELEMENT of Villa Lena, an 18th-century Tuscan estate-turned-hotel that’s also a thriving artist residency, is the convergence of nature and culture. “We try to weave the two together whenever we can,” says Lena Evstafieva, whose family bought the 1,300-acre property in 2008. Along with her husband, musician Jérôme Hadey, and nightlife entrepreneur Lionel Bensemoun (of Le Baron fame), Evstafieva took on the daunting task of renovating the estate, reopening it in 2013. The final touch: having artist and entrepreneur André Saraiva pen the Villa Lena logo in chic handwritten script. The Nashville-based blogger for A Beautiful Mess covers all things food, home, style, and crafting with a ferociously positive zeal. Dropping in to her home similarly feels a bit like visiting the happiest place in America—a playland for design-loving grown-ups. On a trip to Oaxaca, Mexico, New Yorkers Elise Durbecq and Gillian Tozer fell in love with the structured market bags they saw the local women carrying around. “We recognized the beauty, technique, and tradition,” Tozer explains. Having already worked together at Opening Ceremony, the duo launched TRUSS soon after, collaborating closely with artisans to create high-fashion designs using traditional techniques. One of their bags takes a full day for a skilled weaver to complete. “People come to the market in Mexico and haggle for a blouse that took months to make, even though it’s the same quality as something made in a French atelier,” Durbecq says. “If we don’t pay artisans properly and treat them with respect, the next generation won’t want to learn." Published in May to glowing reviews, the book follows a young waitress’s fast-paced indoctrination into New York City’s restaurant scene. Fresh out of college, Danler’s heroine is hungry for all that the city has to offer, including post-shift alcohol-and drugfueled nights, eventually coming into her own. WALLPAPER CAN MAKE A BIG IMPACT on your walls, but it can also dramatically lift a room when placed only on the ceiling, drawing the eye skyward and creating a calming space overall. An added perk is that this designer’s trick is budget-friendly. Typically a wallpaper installer will charge a few hundred dollars to hang paper on the ceiling of a standard-size room—which is a fraction of the usual cost to paper four walls. The secret to finding this winning combination?
