For the renovation of their 1899 brownstone in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, creative couple Fernando Aciar—a chef, ceramist, and entrepreneur by way of Argentina—and Anna Polonsky—the French founder of a design consultancy for the food and restaurant world, made every design choice in real time. When demo on the parlor-level kitchen began, the crucial decision was the paint color for the floor-to-ceiling cabinetry. Aciar instinctively turned to mustard, indigo, rose, and black—shades that were go-tos for his ceramics brand, Fefostudio. But Polonsky feared the colors would be too trendy in a room they’d be using 24-7. A hue that nodded to nature would be more timeless. After months of disappointing showings in the winter of 2017, British housewares designer Matilda Goad wandered by a little house for sale on a busy road in North West London. “I banged on the door, and the homeowner greeted me in a dressing gown, holding a cup of tea,” she says. “For seekers of the unconventional.” That’s how YSG Studio founder Yasmine Saleh Ghoniem describes the work of her New South Wales, Australia–based firm. Take one look at this Sydney Harbor kitchen project and you’ll know that Ghoniem isn’t overpromising. The peninsula is clad in crocodile green marble; zebrawood veneer runs across the cabinets; and a slab of Calacatta Viola with inky violet veins underscores the fireplace—a gutsy combination that the designer credits to her client’s adamant request for color. As a creative consultant specializing in interior design and visual merchandising, Jen Levy makes a living turning DIY dreams into reality. Thanks to Levy’s know-how and the easygoing landlord of her artsy building in Bushwick, Brooklyn, her less-than-ideal kitchen in her apartment became a blank canvas. Levy’s first move: Make the tiny space feel bigger. By floating an Ikea island along the small alcove wall containing the appliances and cabinets, she instantly expanded the kitchen’s footprint. When San Francisco-based Joanne Duong Bartels, a wardrobe stylist, and Luke Bartels, a skilled woodworker, reimagined their small galley kitchen, the couple knew they would be incorporating a lot of wood given his trade. To keep it from looking too “cabin-y” they needed to add a different texture and a little shine. The handmade zellige tiles feature a translucent glaze that reflects the light and adds sheen. Tiling the entire wall, not just an abbreviated backsplash, creates a large swath of space-expanding, uninterrupted color. “The pink seemed so earthy and just right,” says Luke. OLD MEETS NEW When Emily Ward, half of L.A. design firm Pierce & Ward, set out to reimagine her partner Giovanni Ribisi’s studio as a live-work space for their family, the 1970s Ikea kitchen cabinetry was a welcome surprise: “The wood inside aged perfectly and the old European hinges were made so much better than new hinges,” she says. So Ward painted the existing black cabinet fronts Benjamin Moore’s Chocolate Candy Brown.
