Brynn Jones trades in nostalgia for a living—the Los Angeles–based former model is the owner of Aralda Vintage clothing boutique—and she attributes her affinity for all things throwback to her family. “According to my parents, I’ve been obsessed with the ’60s and ’70s since I was a kid,” she explains. That’s why French photographer, writer, and O.G. style influencer Garance Doré enlisted the help of designer Sarah Sherman Samuel to perfect the look and feel of her new construction Mar Vista home. “Once you make this decision—to live in something more modern, built by a developer—the question is how do you add character? How do you soften the edges? Lourdes Hernández may be best known for the melodious, emotive music she performs under the stage name Russian Red. But she’s also in the business of creating meaningful spaces. When she and her partner, Zach Leigh, found a Mediterranean-style cottage on the border of Silver Lake and Los Feliz in California, they brought in an architect to consult. Always up for a challenge, Emily Ward—half of the duo behind design firm Pierce & Ward—recently reimagined a space with personal ties. More than a decade ago, her partner, actor Giovanni Ribisi, purchased ceramic artist Mineo Mizuno’s Atwater Village property in L.A. to use as an office and studio. Erin Hiemstra, founder of design website Apartment 34, and her husband, Chris, spent five years remodeling the 1850s Victorian they used to call home in San Francisco’s Bayview neighborhood. “It took this long because I made a point to have truly special elements,” says Hiemstra. On the second floor, they started from scratch—taking it down to the studs to create a primary suite. With a new configuration, the former upstairs bathroom became a walk-in closet for Hiemstra and an extra bedroom became a spacious primary bath. The pair connected the rooms via a short hallway. Years ago, when Graham Kostic and Fran Taglia were engaged, they moved from a tiny apartment in Boston’s South End to a 3,000-square-foot condo in a soda factory-turned-auto garage in Chicago. “The layout offered both an open loft feel in the front and a sense of privacy because of the small jewel-box rooms in the back,” says Kostic. “And we loved that juxtaposition.” As soon as the couple moved into the two-bedroom—which includes a massive multipurpose living area and kitchen, as well as a private courtyard and garden in front—they began an extensive eight-month renovation project. When designer Raili Clasen signed on to renovate a 1927 Dutch Colonial on the resort-dotted island of Coronado in Southern California, she drew on the area’s long history as a naval air station base, adding oversize brass pulls in the kitchen (hardware suited for a ship’s galley) and navy camo wallpaper in the entry. In the homeowner’s three-year-old son’s bathroom, Clasen put a spin on tradition, without taking anything too seriously.
