Within the world of fairytales, there is nothing especially frog-like about a frog. Stories do not go into slimy detail about quotidian amphibious life. The frog could as easily be a squirrel, or a spider. Instead, the frog serves a narrative function: its purpose is to be kissed and turn into a prince or princess. Similarly, a fairytale does not explore the internal psychology and occult religion of a witch; she too exists primarily in terms of her function, to frustrate the hero or heroine’s desires in numerous possible ways, including transforming them into a frog. But the genre kickstarted by Assassin’s Creed has since been largely abandoned by triple-A studios – bequeathed to indie developers who have begun to explore the multiplayer potential of hiding in plain sight for themselves. For most of its duration, this self-styled ‘reverse city builder’ is, in fact, nothing of the sort. Rather, it’s a reskinned city builder, one with eco-consciousness at the fore. As with most games in this genre, you start out with a barren wasteland, and your objective is to use your limited but growing means to ensure it flourishes. You must still supply power to buildings, piecing together an infrastructure while bearing your environment and its randomly generated topography in mind. And there is, as ever, a delicate equilibrium of resources to be maintained. Here, however, you’re doing it to restore an ecosystem, before removing any evidence of human presence. Across a series of diary entries she tracks her experiences in the Supremacy Software boardroom and with the exhausted workers outside its doors, as the authors tackle a range of themes such as crunch, sexual harassment and release-now-patch-later culture. Over the past few months, millions of videogame followers have been delighted by their hobby directly inspiring one of the most critically acclaimed TV shows in recent years. No longer are the words “based on a videogame” accompanied by a whiff of desperation and mediocrity. Instead, we’ve been able to stand up proudly to proclaim: yes, I watch Poker Face. Is everyone OK? We have to ask because, well, this issue’s Play selection suggests that today’s game designers are not exactly the happiest of bunnies right now. The Last Worker, for example, paints a vividly bleak picture of humanity’s future, casting you as the sole living employee of Jüngle, an online retail giant whose resemblance to any existing company is, ahem, surely coincidental. Given the recent developments in generative AI, concern about robots taking over our jobs is surely at an all-time high. And so, while its dystopian future is built from an earlier iteration of these fears – that automation would replace the labour of our bodies, not our minds – The Last Worker arrives feeling more of the moment than writer-director Jörg Tittel and developer Wolf & Wood could ever have expected. Rockfish’s sci-fi sequel junks the Roguelike format of its predecessor for the grand expanse of the open world. In many ways it typifies a formula honed by the likes of Assassin’s Creed over several iterations – except, of course, that almost all of it takes place in the airless void of space. Vistas of rolling hills are thus replaced by the art of the skybox, painted with hula-hooped planetoids and splendid orange gas clouds, while towers and caves switch out for clusters of asteroids harbouring mineral deposits, and hanging space wrecks torn apart by some forgotten war. Nobody could have been especially surprised by the news, in November 2021, that Netflix was officially launching its own videogame division. The company made its first attempt at a Stranger Things tie-in game back in 2017, after all, and has been experimenting with interactive video since Black Mirror spinoff Bandersnatch and a repurposed version of Telltale’s Minecraft: Story Mode hit the service in 2018.
