Restoration Hardware's first tabletop collection began with a search for the perfect white plate—a simple enough quest, but not for Gary Friedman. As chairman emeritus, creator, and curator of the home-furnishings brand, Friedman is legendary in his pursuit of perfection. "When there are so many people in the world selling tableware," he says, "you have to have a reason for being." Friedman's goal was to design plates that were "beautiful and elegant, yet casual and relaxed enough to use every day." He spent more than two years in pursuit of this platonic ideal, with help from his team, including the designer Peri Wolfman (cofounder of the late SoHo housewares emporium Wolfman-Gold & Good Company, which was renowned for its white dinnerware). As far back as Sally Horchow can remember, the Horchow Collection has been part of her life. She was three years old when her father, Roger, launched his eponymous luxury mail-order catalogue, the first not affiliated with a retail store. Sally modeled, took orders, packed boxes, and sometimes accompanied her parents on their European buying jaunts until 1988, when the Collection was bought by Neiman Marcus. To celebrate its 40th anniversary, the company recently returned to its roots by appointing the founder's daughter to serve as lifestyle director. Her latest project: helping to create and launch HorchowNOW, an up-to-date and budget-friendly collection of furniture and accessories that just hit the market. In 2005, Jennifer Lopez launched Miami Glow by JLo, a fragrance inspired by the city's "palm trees, beaches, parties, freedom, and passion." In 2012, Tom Wolfe published Back to Blood, an epic novel also inspired by Miami—specifically, one reviewer said, the city's relationship to "race, sex, art, and immigration." After renewing his love of the sea while living on the Greek island of Santorini, hotelier Costis Psychas finds an even more secluded spot to create his ultimate water world COSTIS PSYCHAS was diving off the coast of Therassia, an islet in Greece's Aegean Sea, when he first spotted his future dream home. In an age of computer-operated machines, the Urban Electric Co.'s workshop in Charleston, South Carolina—where apprentices assemble light fixtures under the tutelage of master craftsmen—might seem charmingly anachronistic. But the 10-year-old company has proved to be ahead of the curve, reviving small-scale American manufacturing as "Made in U.S.A." swings back into vogue. Wearing black ballet slippers, Susannah Phillips pads around the living room-cum-studio of her prewar apartment in Washington Heights, the Manhattan neighborhood north of Harlem that has lately become something of a magnet for artists. Phillips, a recent transplant from Montreal, gazes out the window at the gray mist. Even on a gloomy day, the view of the George Washington Bridge is spectacular. "I've always wanted to live here," she says. Phillips recently painted a series of moody landscapes in this room, though she pieced together the compositions from drawings made at the rustic camp built by her grandparents in the Maine wilderness. OUTDOOR ELEMENTS: SURFACE TENSION New Orleans architect Lee Ledbetter equips his outside spaces with materials that combine both beauty and brawn Q: How challenging is it to design spaces for outdoor living in a city like New Orleans? A: More so than in many other places. In our subtropical climate, the heat and humidity factor into the design. For instance, because brick walls and patios absorb heat, I choose light-color or painted brick to deflect the sun and place darker brick or granite pavers in shady spots. My favorite brick is from Louisiana's St. Joe Brick Works, which has been in operation since the 19th century. I love the brick's soft colors and the wood-molded texture. Light-color stone pavers—travertine, limestone, cast stone—are also a great material for outdoor living. The…

In the late 19th century, the advent of mass-produced metal wire gave rise to a new category of furnishings destined for conservatories and gardens. Those early peacock chairs and plant stands reflected Victorian tastes for fanciful ornamentation. Later, midcentury designers redefined wire for a new era of furniture—or, as Harry Bertoia called his Diamond chair, "functional sculpture." For decorator David Kleinberg, the allure of wire furniture remains strong. "It's lightweight, durable, and transportable," he says, underscoring why the material is so popular for outdoor use. But where comfort is paramount, such as for barstools and dining chairs, cushions are essential, he adds. When Marco Polo Stufano first set eyes on Greenwood Gardens in Short Hills, New Jersey, he was bowled over by what he saw. "My first impression was the grand scale of it," recalls Stufano, the legendary gardener behind New York's jewel-box Wave Hill for 35 years. In 2002 Stufano was asked to take a look at Greenwood by the Garden Conservancy, which helps to save exceptional American gardens and lends its expertise to those projects. "At the back of the house, there was a view to a garden and pool, and formal boxwood hedges, and in the other direction, there were a cascade and follies," says Stufano. To step into Michael Trapp's house is to be surrounded by an astonishing mix of furniture, objects, and textiles from all over the world. It's an Aladdin's cave, and its style is hard to categorize. Some people restore; Trapp reinvents. When the theatrical is called for, no one does it better. But if the situation requires something practical, he's equally adept. Trapp is generally acknowledged as one of the earliest proponents of bringing garden statuary, architectural fragments, and anything metal, from fencing to furniture, indoors. SITTING PRETTY Yes, Bert Stern photographed Marilyn Monroe wearing nothing but a scarf and jewels. But that's only the most iconic sitting from a long and fascinating life. A new documentary, Bert Stern: Original Mad Man, traces the career of the Brooklyn-born artist, who began in the mail room of Look magazine, became a sought-after commercial photographer in the 1950s, and went on to create indelible portraits of Catherine Deneuve, right, Sophia Loren, Suzy Parker—with whom he is shown below—and countless others. When Mary McDonald began designing her handsome new fabric and trims collection for Schumacher and eye-popping rugs for Patterson, Flynn & Martin, she turned to her three favorite "lady decorators" for inspiration. "I've always loved Nancy's classic taste, Madeleine's wackiness, and Elsie's whimsy. I wanted the collection to reflect what they might have done now," says McDonald, one of Bravo's Million Dollar Decorators. When it came to the mastery of metal in the early 20th century, few people compared with Edgar-William Brandt. Working primarily with iron, the French designer and forgeron—or blacksmith—transformed a seemingly unglamorous material into seductive Art Deco furniture, objects, and architectural elements with incredibly intricate details. Frequently depicting natural motifs, he made handrails festooned with pinecones, grilles blooming with stylized flowers, and screens that appear to burst with gushing fountains. He possessed as much technical expertise as talent, which sometimes took his work in surprising directions. In between such high-profile commissions as the banister for the Mollien staircase at the Louvre in 1914 and the eternal flame for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Paris in 1923, he also designed and manufactured a portable mortar that became a valuable…

FRINIER ON OUTDOOR FURNITURE Step outside and take a seat. If you find yourself sitting on anything more elegant than a webbed folding chair (circa 1972), chances are you have Richard Frinier to thank. Three decades ago, the California-based sculptor and product designer began creating outdoor furniture—first as an in-house designer for Brown Jordan and later for such firms as Century Furniture, Dedon, and Sunbrella. As Americans embraced the concept of indoor- outdoor living, Frinier's sky's-the-limit designs—weatherproof canopied sofas, rain-resistant upholstery, futuristic outdoor pods—often served as the catalyst. "When I started out there wasn't much more than patio chairs," Frinier says. "But today there's no difference between outdoors and indoors." This dish is a variation of the classic coulibiac, once the very definition of Continental cuisine. It's an old Russian recipe that made its way to France in the early 20th century, and the food journalist Craig Claiborne later made it popular here in the U.S. The original and far more complicated recipe calls for a whole side of salmon (or sometimes sturgeon), which is then baked inside a brioche crust with mushrooms, eggs, dill, and rice to hold it all together. My version retains all the essential elements of coulibiac but is prepared in a much simpler way. It's similar to an open-face tart, using a sheet of puff pastry as a shell that gives the dish a flaky, buttery crunch. Salmon roe mixed into the sauce just before…

"WE DIDN'T want to make a fashiony interior," says the Paris-based designer Michael Coorengel. "For us, decoration should look almost natural." So, when he and his partner, Jean-Pierre Calvagrac, set out to rejuvenate an 18th-century manor house in the Bordeaux wine region, it made sense to them to re-create a Louis XVI–style decor. Period appropriate, yes, but upon first sight, the color palette seems strikingly, almost shockingly, modern. Walls are bright green, sunny yellow, vivid turquoise, and deep teal. Yet, Coorengel points out, these are exactly the type of shades that originally would have been used at Versailles. After all, colors fade over 300 years.
