With its mix of sun, surf, and cheap thrills, Brooklyn's Coney Island has long drawn crowds for its classic boardwalk and such colorful events as the annual Mermaid Parade. While developers debate the future of "the people's beach," "Coney Island: Visions of an American Dreamland, 1861–2008"—an exhibition at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Connecticut—shows how the resort has captured the imagination of artists for almost two centuries. Gary Friedman must have a guardian angel. On an evening in late October, the CEO of Restoration Hardware hosted more than 1,600 guests for the opening of the three-story RH West Hollywood, just 48 hours after gaining a certificate of occupancy. "We made the impossible possible," he said, greeting celebrities such as Mad Men star January Jones, music mogul Tommy Mottola, and socialites Nicky and Paris Hilton. Like Brad Pitt in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Vladimir Kagan only seems to get younger with the decades. It's not enough that the avant-garde furniture he created back in the 1950s, '60s, and '70s is popular with designers and collectors including Tom Ford and Kelly Wearstler. The octogenarian is as active as ever, documenting his travels on his blog (he takes photos with his iPhone) and creating prototypes for new designs on his 3D printer. His now-classic furnishings—from the gravity-defying Contour chaise to the sexy Serpentine sofa— are represented by Ralph Pucci. Three years ago, Alex MacArthur had a thriving antiques shop in the arty, buzzing part of Brighton, England, known as Kemptown. So she closed it. "I like to move on when things are good," she says with a laugh. Today, MacArthur sells her wares from her home, a bowfront Regency townhouse with a view of the sea, in which almost every room is a showcase for her dazzlingly eclectic selection of furniture, lighting, artwork, and artifacts. "I went from having a local clientele to having a national and then international one," MacArthur explains. "I was traveling more, and sometimes open only three days a week, but I realized I was doing just as well because people were ordering from abroad." Thirty-five years ago, the London-born artist David Gentleman bought a rural weekend home for his family in a village in East Anglia. The appeal of the area, he writes in his new book, In the Country (Full Circle Editions), "was and is its unre markableness…there's nothing much except the pub to attract visitors." But Gentleman's exuberant watercolors, many painted in the open air over the past few years, show that this seemingly ordinary corner of England—with its thatched cottages, medieval church, and stately 18th-century home where the annual fair is held, complete with falconry demonstrations and a sheepdog-herding contest—is rich in natural beauty and enduring tradition. Tagines take their name from the earthenware dish in which they are prepared. These vessels, with their tall conical lids, are designed so that the flavor and perfume of the spices—cinnamon, cumin, and turmeric, among others—are captured in a cloud of fragrant vapor. This recipe is an interpretation of the one we serve at Boulud Sud, my Mediterranean-inspired restaurant in New York City. The chicken legs hold up well to the slow method of cooking. We use a tagine, but a cast-iron Dutch oven will work just as well. The beauty of this recipe is its flexibility: You can substitute pumpkin for cauliflower, or dried apricots for raisins, or an infinite number of variations. In the living room of Anita Heske and Ole Damm's house on the coast of Denmark, the sofas are by Flexform, the fireplace surround is made of stacked granite, and the ceiling is oak; the bookshelf is a custom design, and the vintage hemp rug is Turkish. In the living room of a house in Belgium designed by architect Vincent Van Duysen, the armchair and ottoman are by Huyghe Decoratie, the cocktail table and bench are by Christian Liaigre, the wood cabinetry is custom made, and the window blinds are by Brustor. He was brought up in a rustic area between Ghent and Antwerp, surrounded, he recalls, "by hills, cows, and farmers working the land. It's part of my culture." The late French designer Pierre Paulin, above right, was best known for his daringly modern seating—soft, sexy chairs shaped like tongues and mushrooms. In 1972, he dreamed up a six-floor modular residence outfitted with 18 distinctive pieces of furniture for iconic American firm Herman Miller. The project never came to fruition (though the maquette has long resided at the Centre Pompidou in Paris). Now Louis Vuitton is bringing this lost collaboration to light by putting Paulin's furniture designs into production for the first time. For the Miami home of filmmaker Michael Bay, interior designer Lynda Murray conceptualized a site-specific ceiling-to-floor light sculpture, executed by glass artist Alison Berger, that cascades down the center of a 40-foot nautilus staircase. Rising three stories from the living room to the roof deck, the glass-and-steel staircase was designed by architect Chad Oppenheim. The living room floors are limestone, and the wall of windows looks out onto a reflecting pool. 2. When they first became popular in 18th-century France, these tables had only two or three ornately carved legs and were attached to walls with a bracket called a "console"—hence their contemporary name. Once used to display small sculptures and other objets, these elegantly slender pieces serve any number of purposes today. "You can use one in an entry, as a bedside table, as a dining room sideboard, or against the back of a sofa," says designer Oliver M. Furth. "It can even be used as an impromptu desk. A console adds an interesting twist to any room. It's like cooking—one new ingredient changes the dish." Hunting for a great place in Milan is a little bit like nabbing the perfect plate of mozzarella in America: It's practically impossible. All the good apartments are taken; they have been for the last 400 years, and no one has any intention of selling the family palazzo with the frescoed walls, stately entryways, and soaring ceilings.
