When designer Jeffrey Alan Marks was hired for a project in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles, the woman of the house gave him a succinct brief: “I want a rock-and-roll farmhouse.” By that she meant no chintz or checks, and no quaint cottagey touches to call up the charms of country living. Instead, she wanted bold, beautiful, and maybe a tiny bit butch. There was no need to conjure the nostalgia usually associated with the rural aesthetic, because the house was already situated on an actual farm of sorts: The property includes three structures on less than two acres, with a garden and a stable that can house as many as 12 horses. “The trick,” says Marks, “was to make a house in the middle of L.A. look like…

A century ago, potato fields and agricultural barns were as common on the eastern end of Long Island, New York, as seagulls and swallows. Most of that land was later sold off for residential development and golf courses; nowadays, original barns on the South Fork are nearly extinct. But 41 summers ago, when artist John Alexander—at the invitation of Willem de Kooning—drove his 1970 El Camino from Houston, where he was teaching, to the Hamptons, barns still existed—for rent and sometimes for sale. In short order, Alexander uprooted from Texas and moved into a SoHo loft, made a name for himself on the downtown New York art scene, and started renting summer places out east. AT FIRST GLANCE, it might not seem that rock and roll and interior design have a lot in common. But as we were working on this A-List issue, I was also reading Bruce Springsteen’s autobiography, Born to Run, and came across a passage that I think applies to design—in fact, to any creative field. “Many of music’s most glorious moments feel as though they were birthed in an explosion of raw talent and creative instinct (some of them even were!)” he writes. “But . . . if you want to burn bright, hard and long, you will need to depend upon more than your initial instincts. DREAM PALACES For much of the past century, painter Jeremiah Goodman has evocatively captured the living rooms, bedrooms, and libraries of some the world’s brightest stylesetters, producing glamorous portraits of spaces once inhabited by Greta Garbo, the Duchess of Windsor, and Tony Duquette. The art of Alexander Calder, whose delicately poised and sometimes vividly colored mobiles brought motion to abstract art in the 1930s, has stood the test of time, but all too often by doing just that: standing—still and unmoving. Safeguarded in museums, Calder’s kinetic sculptures rarely wheel in a breeze these days or, in the case of his early motorized constructions, clank and rattle on cue. But “Calder: Hypermobility,” a new exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, puts some of his most famous works back into action, including a few that have remained static, despite his intentions, for 80 years. Kelly Behun knows the rules of luxury design. She just likes to break them. Who else would line the walls of a classic Upper East Side apartment in blue zigzags? Or spray-paint graffiti in the entry of a Brooklyn brownstone? And hang a floor-to-ceiling portrait of George Michael in a Baltimore penthouse? The Pittsburgh native began her career as a designer for hotelier Ian Schrager; when she launched her own firm in 2001, her first job was to create a loft for her former boss (“No pressure,” she jokes). With their tough armor of thorny leaves, artichokes can appear intimidating, and many home chefs find the idea of preparing them daunting. The process is admittedly a little more laborious than peeling a potato, but the result is worth the effort. Trim your way past the green outer leaves, and you will be rewarded with the sweet yellow inner leaves and the meaty, succulent heart. This recipe is a traditional Provençal barigoule, in which artichokes are braised in a fragrant broth of olive oil, herbs, and a little white wine, along with carrots, pearl onions, tomatoes, and celery. Walter Lamb was an inventive recycler long before recycling became a popular cause. Living in Hawaii during the aftermath of the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, Lamb came to see opportunity where others saw only destruction. Working with bronze, brass, and copper tubing salvaged from sunken naval ships in the mid-1940s, he set about designing outdoor furniture composed of sculptural metal frames wrapped with cord. The results were full of natural magic— rather than rusting like steel or rotting like wood, these pieces aged gracefully, developing a beautiful patina over time. Lamb, born in 1901, was soon fielding requests from hotels and private clients; he moved to California by the early 1950s. In the 1840s, a farmhouse was erected in Bridgehampton, New York, a quiet agricultural community on the South Fork of Long Island. The builders relocated an old one-room schoolhouse from the main street of the village and turned it into a wing of the house, a common practice in the 19th century— why waste perfectly good wood? The house continued to grow over the decades, with additions in the 1870s and 1900s, until it became something of an architectural jumble, with an ill-suited Italianate cornice and porch columns. Still, it was a lovable jumble. Five years ago, a couple with three young daughters stumbled across a listing for the house on 1stdibs.
