In 2013, famed Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki lost the vision in his right eye as a result of a retinal artery obstruction. Many would be crushed by such an impediment, yet Araki seized on it, creating the series Love on the Left Eye, featuring works whose right sides are concealed. New York designer Steven Gambrel recently put his own spin on that optimistic spirit when he created a leather-paneled library in a landmark 1929 Art Deco gem with enviable views of Lake Michigan. When you’re handed a madeleine, life suddenly becomes joyful. I had plaid sheets as a kid—but they weren’t just any plaid. (Are you surprised?) They were tartan with a mossy green base and stripes in ripe plum and burnt sienna. Florist Emily Thompson has built a business upon helter-skelter arrangements of brambly branches, inky-hued seedpods, and unbridled foliage. Lately, her head has been underwater, so to speak: “I’m doing a lot of things that relate to aquaculture,” she says.
