Herzog & de Meuron In the historic Porta Volta neighborhood of Milan, the Swiss architects built a new home for the research-based Fondazione Giangiacomo Feltrinelli: a modern glass temple of knowledge and reading, featured in Elle Decor Italy’s February 2017 issue. Eric Egan The Milan-based interior designer decorated a 10,000-square-foot 17th-century farmhouse in central Italy from start to finish in 12 months. I HAD AN IMPRESSION OF MIAMI long before I ever visited. I grew up in Paris and loved hearing about the South Beach scene: Gianni Versace and his mansion, Madonna hanging out at the clubs. When I first arrived here 10 years ago, I expected to find a sexy paradise with pastel-colored Art Deco buildings and convertibles cruising along the beach. And a lot of Miami Beach was exactly like that. But on that trip, I also discovered another side to the city at Vizcaya, the Renaissancestyle estate built by the industrialist James Deering in 1916. Wandering through the villa and its gardens, I found that there was a link between European taste and American culture that was surprising to see in the midst of such an easygoing and cool…

In the fall of 2016, when the beauty titan Bobbi Brown departed her 25- year-old eponymous brand, she could easily have taken time off. Instead, she immediately threw herself into a new start-up. “I called my husband, saying, ‘OK, it’s done. I’m out,’” Brown recalls telling her spouse, Steven Plofker, a businessman and real estate developer. “He said, ‘I’m really happy, because I’m doing this hotel, and I need your help.’” This March, the couple opens the George Inn, a 32-room boutique hotel in Montclair, New Jersey, where they live (thegeorge montclair.com). David Rockwell has a penchant for the theatrical. Yes, he’s known for having an imaginative, sometimes sensational approach to design—have you seen the three-story chandelier he made for the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas? While he hasn’t won the Pritzker (yet), Rockwell is the only starchitect to have won a Tony Award. So it was not a shock when the Second Stage Theater company commissioned the Rockwell Group to reimagine the Helen Hayes Theatre, on West 44th Street in New York. The Hayes, which was originally called the Little when it opened in 1912, is a rara avis among Broadway theaters, as it’s the smallest and one of the last to be independently owned. When she was 13 years old, Lauren Ridloff—who is deaf and making her Broadway debut in the revival of Children of a Lesser God—decided to stop using her voice and communicate in only three ways: through American Sign Language, an interpreter, or writing. “I could see that people were judging my intelligence based on the way I was speaking,” explains Ridloff, who grew up in Chicago and now lives in a Williamsburg, Brooklyn, brownstone with her husband and two sons. “When I use my voice, I have no idea what it sounds like.” She shares this choice with Sarah, the deaf school janitor whom she plays in Children, which starts previews March 22. I don’t always reveal everything about a dish. That wouldn’t be fun. It’s more sporting to play a game with dinner guests to see if they can recognize what they’re eating. I live for that reaction that’s somewhere between happily surprised and thoroughly bemused. And why not? Cooking should be an adventure, and experimenting with unexpected ingredients is a great way to keep things interesting. With today’s access to virtually anything, anywhere, there’s no excuse not to. As a chef, I would advise you to perfect the traditional recipe first before making alterations. There’s a lot of trial and error in discovering new flavors and how they work with each other.
