In Salone del Mobile’s firmament, Marva Griffin is an entire constellation unto herself. As the founder of SaloneSatellite, a fair in Milan that coincides with Salone proper and showcases the work of up-and-coming designers, she has given a platform to more than 12,000 creative young people since 1998. Protean French designer Patrick Jouin and renowned architect Oki Sato are counted among the muckety-mucks whose careers were kick-started by Griffin. “I treat them all as if they were my kids,” she says. IF PARIS IS THE CAPITAL OF romance, where does a Parisienne go to escape heartbreak? In the case of Coco Chanel, she retreated to Venice in 1920 to mourn her longtime love Arthur Edward “Boy” Capel, who had perished in a car accident. There, amid Titian-filled churches, stately palazzi, and the sunbaked Lido, she found a way through grief and toward fresh inspiration. In 1976, when Herman Miller released the Modular Sofa Group, designed by Ray Wilkes, its internal marketing materials described the components as “attractive, comfortable seating solutions for lounge environments.” Talk about an understatement. With this offering, which was soon colloquially referred to as the “Chiclet sofa” for its resemblance to the popular chewing gum, Wilkes created iconic modern seating that melded cutting-edge technology with killer good looks: The cold-cured polyurethane injection foam cushions—a new process at the time—ensured a seamless, rounded appearance that didn’t pucker or dent but was still lounge-friendly. FOR INTERIOR DESIGNER ELLIE CULLMAN, THE HAUSER PATRON SALON at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall was almost a second home before COVID-19 effectively turned off cultural pursuits like a light. AS A MOROCCAN CITIZEN who was born and raised in Fez, went to university in France, and has lived and worked in the United States and Europe, Ismail Tazi has always appreciated cross-national exchange. He also has a long-standing passion for the craft industry, a legacy he inherited from his great-grandparents, who worked with silk and embroidery. So when Tazi decided to leave his job in investment banking in 2019 to start a design brand, it was inevitable that these two facets would find a distinct harmony. In the nearly 10 years she has spent as the Donald R. Mullen, Jr. director and chief curator of High Line Art, Cecilia Alemani has grown accustomed to constant change. Unlike with traditional museum and gallery pieces, the outdoor works she commissions for the High Line park in New York City—from artists like Simone Leigh, Barbara Kruger, and Rashid Johnson—must contend with weather and the ever-evolving architecture of the surrounding Chelsea neighborhood. “It’s a challenge that can become an inspiration,” says Alemani, who for spring 2021 is unveiling a marble and stainless steel retainer by Hannah Levy and a tank-cum-smokestack from Ibrahim Mahama. “We are expanding the notion of public art beyond the bronze sculpture.” Last year, Alemani was appointed curator of the 59th edition of the Venice Biennale, which…

THE TRATTORIA WAS NOTHING special, but its floor grabbed my attention. After a day strolling the Mediterranean beach and cobbled lanes of Italy’s Sestri Levante, I was hunting for an aperitivo when I saw it—a decades-old composition of hexagonal tiles with a diamond pattern in three colors that created an illusory three-dimensional field of cubes. That such a graphic statement was present in a timeworn trattoria, where sandy shoes and sloshed Negronis ruled, was unexpected. An old saying recommends that you should never meet your heroes, but in the case of this collaboration between Richard Christiansen and Gaetano Pesce, the rendezvous was fruitful. Christiansen is the founder of the Chandelier Creative agency and the Flamingo Estate, a beauty and home brand named after his Los Angeles property. A longtime fan of Pesce, Christiansen dreamed of working with the Italian architect and designer; it became a reality through a chance meeting. “We shared the idea that art should be at every table, and that ordinary, practical objects have the potential to inspire us all,” Christiansen says.
