Growing up the daughter of poor Panamanian immigrants, I never had a garden. Then in college, I read Alice Walker’s In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens, and to have a garden took on a new meaning for me. It became a metaphor for rooting myself and my work in the long history of Black-women activism, creativity, and the art of manufacturing possibility in the cracks between race, gender, and class that others ascribed to you. For the 2022 edition of Design on a Dime, Housing Works’ annual benefit that took place in April, ELLE DECOR selected Brooklyn-based designer Delia Kenza to create a provocative vignette. Her mission was to make a beautiful, livable, and—most important—eco-friendly interior that bucked the tired shibboleth that green living isn’t pretty. “No earth tones, wood, or ‘bringing nature in’ here,” Kenza says. She knows sustainable design can be so much more. To prove her point, Kenza worked with star brands from across the interior design firmament. She filled the space with a sleek Caesarstone recycled quartz side table and pedestals, ergo-nomic and net-positive chairs and an energy-efficient pendant from Humanscale, throw pillows and a dramatic curtain of recycled poly-ester fabrics from Kravet, as well as an antique (or “pre-loved,” as…

In the New York townhouse designed by Robert Couturier for the composer and conductor Jonathan Sheffer, friendship and family led the charge. “His needs are all about his children,” says Couturier of his client, a father to seven-year-old twin girls. “Jonathan wanted something very easy, but he still needed his aesthetic demands respected, the most important of which was lots of color.” Fortunately, Couturier wasn’t starting from scratch—he and Sheffer have been friends for many years. “I first met him through the photographer David Seidner, who was an aesthete of the highest degree,” says Couturier, a Parisian now based in New York. He discovered he had much in common with Sheffer, who, among other accomplishments, has conducted numerous film scores, including Interview with the Vampire and A Time to Kill.…

“THE EDITH FARNSWORTH HOUSE IS LOCATED SOUTHWEST OF CHICAGO. DESIGNED and constructed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe between 1945 and 1951, it is essentially a house with one room, wrapped by a continuous glass wall and ordered around a functional core. I love the simplicity. All the panes of glass are the same size, and the roof is supported by just four columns. During my first visit my excitement was so high, I walked around in a state of elation. Everything is conceived so generously. The scale is a surprise, like the Barcelona chair being one-and-a-half times wider than you need. The house was designed to sit above the floodplain, but of course the levels rose and now it appears to be literally floating against a backdrop of trees…

NEW HOPE, PENNSYLVANIA + NEW YORK CITY OLDE HOPE ANTIQUES Patrick Bell Patrick Bell of Olde Hope Antiques has been dealing in 18th- and early-19th-century American furniture since the 1970s. Based in Pennsylvania and New York City, Bell and business partner Edwin Hild have sourced for the likes of Jacqueline Onassis and Oprah Winfrey. The pair caught their first big break at a local auction. “Ed found this painting so covered in dirt we could barely see what it was,” Bell says. Purchased for $1 in 1977, the painting turned out to be a portrait of one of America’s earliest abolitionists, Benjamin Lay. It sold to the National Portrait Gallery, and the proceeds paved the way for the duo’s first storefront. Is a more auspicious beginning even possible? Bell now…

When it comes to outdoor living, a few prolific designers immediately come to mind—the names that shaped the patio-and-gazebo aesthetic into what it is today. Chief among them is Richard Frinier, whose most notable works include a handful of collections for Brown Jordan. “He’s one of the more intellectual designers I’ve ever worked with,” says Stephen Elton, the company’s chief brand officer. “He’s really good at innovation and pushing the envelope.” That rule-breaking spirit—one that Brown Jordan has exemplified since its founding in 1945—is exactly what propelled Frinier to create the Venetian collection for the brand in the 1980s. Characterized by X-shaped backs and armrests capped with a scrolled flourish, Venetian brought a neoclassical aesthetic to the great outdoors. The foundation had already been poured when Marc Walters and Rick Cassar realized exactly how big their new house in Palm Springs would be. “We never talked about the square footage. We just said, ‘Oh, those are cool-looking drawings. Yeah, that looks great—let’s go for it!’” says Walters, a retired community college instructor. “During the build, one of my biggest fears was that it wouldn’t be inviting.” Fortunately, both their designer and architect had a strategy for reconciling their priorities: a three-bedroom house that was large enough to entertain all their friends and family yet was also exceptionally warm and welcoming. “Cozy was the term that kept coming up,” says designer Sam Cardella, who has been based in Palm Springs since 1996. “That was the prerequisite for everything.” A cozy…

When David Alhadeff first stepped into the palatial, light-filled interior of his new home in the heart of Hollywood, he knew he’d found the site of the next chapter for both his design gallery, the Future Perfect, and his young family. “We’re always interested in architecturally significant homes,” Alhadeff says, “but it’s less about the architecture and more about the way a house feels.” Though it was established in New York City in 2003, the Future Perfect has since 2017 shown work by its roster of designers and makers in residential environments in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. The journalist Walter Isaacson, former editor of Time magazine and biographer of Steve Jobs and Albert Einstein, comes to his love of New Orleans honestly: He was born and raised in the raucously omnivorous, ebullient city. Like many homegrown Southern intellectuals, he went north to make his reputation in the New York literary world. But all those years he was building his career, Isaacson never quite left behind the lyrical city of his birth, with its hothouse atmosphere of sophistication, culture, and inspiration. New Orleans, in particular, with vernacular architecture and design that is an eccentric mashup of Creole, Greek Revival, Italianate, and Edwardian influences, among others, is hard to quit, especially for those with creative imagination.
