Fit for the modern woman: From the austere romance of minimalist ruffles to softly sculpted shapes and reimagined suiting, the 2013 spring-summer collections offer elegance with plenty of flourish. Among the attitudes for which the French are known is their utter disdain for overt enthusiasm. Even the phrase they employ for "waiting for the show to begin"—faute de mieux—translates literally to "for the lack of something better." Literary heavyweight George Saunders has always maintained a fairly light touch as a fiction writer; he'd rather dazzle and delight than dread-educate his readers. His fourth collection, Tenth of December (Random House), hews to this ethos. Ten tales of vastly varying length ("The Semplica Girl Diaries" runs 58 pages, while "Sticks" barely covers two) share an essential playfulness that even their more menacing themes—kidnapping, drug addiction, suicide—can't dislodge.
