I came to fashion consciousness during the grunge era, which is to say I understood fashion only as antifashion. I wore striped overalls, ripped T-shirts, Converse. Special occasions called for ill-fitting thrift-store dresses accessorized with work boots and cardigans. As a teenager, I looked like I'd wandered off a dairy farm and onto the streets of lower Manhattan. When I hit my early twenties, I began to suspect that dressing sexy was not strictly a patriarchal conspiracy. I bought clothes that actually fit and, lo and behold, became a born-again heels wearer—a zealous and devout convert. Amanda FitzSimons goes for broke Hong Kong high-fashion emporium Lane Crawford might seem an unlikely backdrop for an existential crisis, but when jewelry designer Eddie Borgo found himself there amid a display of unapologetically tacky gold chains during a business trip last year, it became exactly that. We've been chatting about, ostensibly, the designer's spring 2013 collection, whose S&M touches—risqué lacing and peekaboo honeycomb textures—had reviewers running riot with allusions to Fifty Shades of Grey.
