Two hundred years of Scottish embroidery history is to be showcased at Dovecot Studios, the world-renowned Edinburgh tapestry studio, in a collaboration with the National Trust for Scotland. The exhibition’s remit ranges from self-taught, amateur and professional embroideries, including small, intimate pieces such as tea cosies, to larger, grander embroidered furniture and furnishings, all housed within Trust collections. Following two years of conservation, many of these objects are being shown publicly for the first time in Stitched: Scotland’s Embroidered Art.
In an opportunity to bring women’s embroidery stories to the fore, the 80 objects shown date from 1720 to 1920, two centuries that saw huge developments in textile practice and process, education, global politics, social change and trade, particularly in Scotland.
