I’M one of those word nerds who look forward to seeing which new words dictionaries choose to include each year, and this year I’m very happy to add ‘vax’ (Oxford) and ‘NFT’ (Collins) to my lexicon. I’m a bit peeved that ‘cheugy’ didn’t make it, although apparently it means ‘no longer regarded as cool or fashionable’, so it’s quite thrilling that it lived up to its own definition. But while I was adding the new words to my folder – yep, I’m afraid that is precisely how nerdy I am – I came across another list I’d kept: words from other languages whose meanings don’t easily translate into English.
