When my colleague asked if I wanted to see the mountain gorillas in Rwanda, I hesitated for all of 10 seconds before agreeing to join him. These endangered animals can now be found in the wild only in Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo – in the Virunga Mountains, a chain of active and dormant volcanoes where the three countries meet, and in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the Kigezi Highlands in Uganda. The statistics are startling. One in 31 American children is now diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, according to an April 2025 Centers for Disease Control (CDC) report – up from one in 150 some 20 years ago.
