Back in the 1980s and ’90s, a turbocharged car was an aspirational and exciting thing; manufacturers stuck massive ‘Turbo’ decals all over their hot streetracer models. Those little whistlin’ snails symbolised bravery, passion and, most of all, effervescent thrust. As Jeremy Clarkson famously explained the process, “exhaust gases go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens, and you go faster”. This used to be the stuff of dreams.
