CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR Despite Ford’s best efforts, the RS Turbo was never turned into an effective Group A proposition, and was never able to best the might of Rover’s V8 SD1. The reasons why are complex, but Chris is swift to point the finger at the awkward transmission, a trait which resulted in more than a few imploded gearboxes. That Lovell went from a distant ninth on the car’s debut (the 1984 Mewla), to a far more competitive fourth on the West Cork less than a year later shows that the RS Turbo had potential, but it remained a potential largely unfulfilled. THE P100 LEGACY The P100 started off life in South Africa, a country which loves its pickups or as they call them, “bakkies”. Based initially on the Mk3 Cortina, they sold well from their release in 1971 and continued to sell well when updated to the Mk4 and Mk5 Cortina cab in 1977 and 1980 respectively. The UK didn’t actually get any P100’s until 1982, and by then the outdated Cortina cab meant it wasn’t very popular over here… but that all changed in 1988, when the Sierra-based P100 was launched. BACK IN THE DAY 5 YEARS AGO… There’s always more than one way to skin a cat, as they say. But the same is true of tuning the Mk3 Fiesta too, as we showcased in the March 2015 issue. One the one hand, there’s the ‘keep it looking like a base model but add a tuned Zetec Turbo' approach that Shaun Green took with his sleeper-spec Fiesta.
