FAST FLEET HANNAH FOCUS TRACK CAR CHASSIS TWEAKS In preparation for hitting the tracks (whenever that may be) Hannah has been using the time to fine-tune her FoCos’ suspension setup… Wow, it’s been a while since I last wrote one of these updates. After a very hectic 2019, the Focus Cosworth track car build progressed very quickly. The shell was stripped and painted in a slightly brighter colour that better reflects my personality within weeks, and Mark and I wasted no time building the engine and sourcing all the parts needed to reassemble it all back together as quickly as possible. GROUP N? Everyone remembers the wild and beautiful Escort Group A and WRC cars campaigned by Ford in the 1990s. But Group N cars were mostly driven by (and are today still driven by) privateer teams without the multi-million-pound budget for a fully-blown Group A car. Group N cars were known as the ‘production class’, and fewer modifications were allowed to the standard car’s engine, drivetrain, brakes, geometry and electronics than the equivalent Group A/WRC cars. Back in the day, you could buy a Roadsport Escort shell from Ford, which came with no radio, sunroof or electric windows and was the ideal base to build a Group N car. TECH BASICS SPARK PLUGS There’s a lot more to the simple spark plug than you might think… Spark plugs may be seen as minor components of a petrol engine, but if the wrong choice of plugs is made, or they are not installed properly, or they break down unexpectedly, then they will cause all kinds of headaches. Not to mention costly diagnostic work looking for misfires elsewhere. Put simply, the spark plug is a device that forces an electrical current across an air gap creating a high voltage spark that ignites the air/fuel in the combustion chamber of the engine.
