WHY USE METHANOL INJECTION? You’ll have read countless builds throughout these pages that mention methanol injection like Tom’s ST here, but why do people use it? To put it simply, a water/methanol injection usually enters the system before the throttle body and mixes with the air drawn from the intake. The water/methanol then changes state from liquid to gas by using the excess heat to evaporate the liquid and thus cooling intake temperatures – like when you sweat to cool down. Colder temperatures mean you can pack more air into the cylinder, and therefore you can add more fuel, as well as advancing the timing and increasing the compression ratio for more power. WHAT WE SAY JAMIE, EDITOR: “I’ve always thought the XR2i was something of a fast Ford underdog; never quite as hardcore as the XR2, and lacking the flamboyance of its turbocharged cousin. But with numbers of nice examples in rapid decline over recent years, a tidy XR2i today is a genuine rarity. And the increasing prices and demand reflect this. Personally, my money would be on a straight and tidy car for around the £4000-5000 budget; something that had all the fundamentals in place that I could tinker with and slowly improve while still getting maximum enjoyment from it. KEY POINTS ENGINE Smoking and rattling are common – worry about blue smoke under load, knocking from the bottom end or the white plumes of head gasket failure. TRANSMISSION Floppy gearchange is normal but beware of groaning, growling and crunching – meaning a rebuild is needed. INTERIOR It’ll make or break an XR2i. Ensure the trim is correct, the seats aren’t sagging and the carpets aren’t wet. EXTERIOR XR2is rot a lot. Check everywhere above the tyres for signs of tinworm, especially front footwells and bulkhead. IDENTITY XR2is may be fakes, and spotting the real deal ain’t easy.
