When the first Ford-based Formula Junior engines were made in 1960, the firm operated from a scruffy shack in north London. HOW MUCH TO PAY PROJECT: £8000 TO £12,000 A bag of rusty nuts and bolts might cost less, but you’ll need to spend knocking on five figures for a genuine RS1600i with all the right bits in place. If it looks too good to be true, it’s almost certainly hiding something. GOOD: £12,000 TO £17,500 Usable cars with a current MOT start at about £12,000, but be prepared for discovering some horrors hiding under the skin. Look for an honest RS1600i with high mileage and history rather than a shiny car with too many nonstandard parts. CONCOURS: £17,500 TO £25,000-PLUS Top money follows show-winners and original cars, but a properly-restored RS1600i (with evidence) is worthy of big bucks. WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW? HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO INSURE? Classic car insurance specialists are the best place to find an RS1600i policy – and the price should be much less than for any modern hot hatchback. Look for a mirrored no-claims bonus from your everyday driver, a limited-mileage discount and, crucially, agreed value cover. Some brokers also give discounts for owners’ club members. WHERE DO I FIND ONE? They’re getting tricky to find, but for projects and average-condition cars, classified ads and eBay are the main options. WHAT ARE THEY MADE OF? components an induction system are the airbox or heat shielding and air filter. The airbox/heat shield provides a housing for the air filter and is used to channel cool air from outside the engine bay directly to the filter. It also has the added function of isolating the air from the effects of heat generated by the engine. An air filter is essential to ensure that air drawn into the engine is clean and free from any contaminants that could potentially be harmful. There are many different shapes and sizes of filters used, depending on the application (road car, desert rally car, etc). KEY POINTS IDENTITY Above all else, ensure the RS1600i you’re inspecting is the real deal. Check the shell corresponds with Escort Mk3 build dates and double-check the VIN. ENGINE Tapping is normal from the mechanical lifters, but knocking is a no-no and blue smoke suggests it’s tired. Ensure the twin-coil ignition and finned rocker cover are in place. SUSPENSION Some of the RS1600i’s charm comes from its homologation-derived suspension. If bits are missing you’ll need to spend cash to return the setup to standard. MIKE COSTIN  anengineeringapprentice De Havilland Aircraft, then technical director at Lotus, Mike joined forces with Keith Duckworth in 1958, but initially only as a sleeping partner until 1962.
